Details of the Vernon Dahmer-Gregory Scarpa case in By Any Means and more
The official synopsis of By Any Means notes that the movie is based on a “true story,” as the focus is on Vernon Dahmer’s case. Vernon Dahmer was murdered in 1966, when his house was attacked. Though Vernon Dahmer was able to save his family by helping them escape, he was not able to do so himself. He died from the injuries.
According to reports, Gregory Scarpa was significant in the investigation of the case. By Any Means explores this investigation, which Gregory Scarpa reportedly was involved in after Vernon Dahmer’s tragic death. Though the storyline takes inspiration from true incidents, Vernon Dahmer’s family has raised concerns regarding the content of the movie.

Vernon Dahmer’s son, Dennis Dahmer, has reportedly pointed out that the movie takes the focus away from Vernon Dahmer and sheds more light on Gregory Scarpa’s character. Dennis Dahmer notes that Vernon Dahmer’s works have not been depicted in the movie in a proper manner. Vernon Dahmer’s daughter, Bettie, has also pointed out in an interview with Mississippi Today that By Any Means is “not about” her father and is more about Gregory Scarpa.
However, she does not have any problem with it. Dennis Dahmer has also added in the interview with Mississippi Today that his father’s “legacy deserves to be told truthfully”. Dennis Dahmer thinks that his father’s story should not be “intermeshed with fictional characters and a vigilante justice storyline” as it “did not happen”.

In By Any Means, Vernon Dahmer’s character is depicted by Giancarlo Esposito while Mark Wahlberg brings life to Gregory Scarpa’s character. The fictional composite character of Wayne Strider, with whom Gregory Scarpa joins hands to navigate through the investigation, is played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who recently worked on projects such as Man on Fire, Wonder Man, etc.
In By Any Means, Gregory Scarpa and FBI agent Wayne Strider will take on multiple challenges while navigating through the case of a “wave of brutal killings”. Mark Wahlberg’s Gregory Scarpa is the “notorious mafia hitman”. While working on the case, the two of them, despite their differences, will agree that they are not limited by “the law," which will be a significant element in the movie. The movie is directed by Elegance Bratton.
Elegance Bratton, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, notes that watching Mark Wahlberg embody Gregory Scarpa in the movie caused Gregory Scarpa’s son to get emotional, which is a crucial “stamp of approval” for the movie.
Elegance Bratton also added that Vernon Dahmer is the “moral center” of the storyline and that the goal was to “drop the audience into the point of view of a Black protagonist”. Some of the other cast members of the movie are Nicole Beharie, Josh Lucas, Ethan Embry, etc.
