Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is going back to his Infinity War roots in Avengers: Doomsday

All released trailers of Avengers: Doomsday have made it evident that Thor will play a crucial role in the upcoming film. As Avengers and X-Men try to fight each other to protect their respective universes from the incursions, Thor will be the one to unite them together in the fight against Doctor Doom.

Over the years, Chris Hemsworth's Thor has been an extremely versatile character of the MCU. We have seen multiple sides of the character and are yet to see him in Doomsday. Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Avengers: Doomsday, have now revealed that Thor will be going back to his Infinity War roots.

Infinity War's Thor will be back in Avengers: Doomsday

In Thor's solo films, we have seen him be brave, mighty, kind, funny, and even ruthless. In films like Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War, Thor has been an excellent team player despite being a literal god. However, for a good part of Avengers: Endgame, we saw him suffering from severe depression, PTSD, and survivor's guilt after he failed to stop Thanos.

That also led to him losing all motivation to try and fight again. The Thor of Infinity War had disappeared for a while. Since Endgame, we have seen Thor as a father figure, which was wholesome. But now, Thor will be back to his Infinity War roots for Avengers: Doomsday.

Anthony and Joe Russo, directors of Avengers: Doomsday, recently spoke to CBR in an interview. While they were discussing Chris Hemsworth's performance as Thor throughout the years, Joe Russo said:

"It's fascinating how malleable he is playing that role, and the range that he has. He has a wide array of directors with different tastes and different tones that have interpreted the character. We have a specific point of view on that character. That's what we're going to carry forward, the Infinity War Thor."

Speaking specifically about the version of Thor we will see in Avengers: Doomsday, Joe Russo said:

"We love that sort of warrior version of him, that warrior who has lost everything, who is seeking meaning through battle. Will he ever find it or not? That is the journey he will go on against the greatest foe he's ever met. As you can see from the trailers, it's going to be a hell of a fight."

As Russo's words and the trailers have made evident, Thor is going to face his biggest enemy yet. In the trailer, we have seen Thor admit that Doctor Doom is bigger than any threat he has faced and that he and the other heroes would require a miracle to defeat him. Thus, the Thor we will see now has lost Jane, his parents, and his dear friends, and thinks Loki is dead.

He now wants to save the multiverse so that his adoptive daughter Love can have a life. The Thor we will see in Avengers: Doomsday is thus more of a warrior who will do everything he can to stop Doom. He has lost everything, and the God of Thunder won't give up without a great fight.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Infinity War is streaming on Disney+.
