Christopher Nolan is doing the press circuit as The Odyssey continues to pull impressive numbers in theaters. Every now and then the team behind the movie, including Nolan, is interviewed by several outlets and late-night shows. One of these interactions was between the acclaimed filmmaker and Jimmy Fallon.

In that interaction, they discussed the challenges of making The Odyssey and other behind-the-scenes factoids. But this interview wasn't limited to the latest Christopher Nolan movie. Fallon asked Nolan if he was hoping to make an easier movie next like a rom-com. Nolan chuckled a bit and then went on to reveal that making others laugh is one of the hardest things.

Christopher Nolan surprisingly enjoys romantic comedies:

Nolan was discussing how The Odyssey team pulled off the several breathtaking scenes in his The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon appearance. After that, Fallon went on to ask Chris Nolan if he wanted to take up a project that is easier to make. The cast and crew of The Odyssey have been open for a while that the Greek epic was one of their more challenging (in a good way) shoots.

To this, Nolan responded, saying that making a romantic comedy could be even more difficult than his previous projects:

“I think doing a rom-com would be incredibly difficult. I love watching those movies. But no, I think people who direct comedy, people who do comedy, I think that’s one of the hardest things in the world to make people laugh that way."

The Dark Knight Trilogy filmmaker further went on to add the following:

“Particularly, the risk they take when you make a film—if I show a film to people and maybe they don’t respond to bits of it, I’m like, ‘Ah, they don’t get it. Whatever.’ There’s no hiding behind that when you do comedy. So, I would be terrified of doing anything like that.”

It is particularly refreshing to see an acclaimed filmmaker like Chris Nolan appreciate a genre that many believe is just fluff. However, this is not the first time that the British filmmaker has expressed his love for a movie that many of his fans find surprising. Back in 2024, Nolan revealed that he enjoys some of the Fast & Furious movies.

Nolan's admiration for romantic comedies and Fast & Furious movies will definitely shock the cinephile audience that the filmmaker has cultivated for the past three decades.

What is next for Chris Nolan after The Odyssey?

Today famously interviewed Christopher Nolan on the day The Odyssey was released. The reporter asked Nolan what his plan was after the Greek epic. To this, Christopher Nolan responded that he has no plans as of now and that he expects to work on his next movie in three years. This decision seems to stem from the work that went behind the scenes of The Odyssey.

It should be noted that The Odyssey was the first feature film to be shot entirely using an IMAX camera. Moreover, some portions of the movie were also filmed in the open ocean, which would have been a bit challenging. Therefore, it wouldn't be surprising that Nolan wants to take a break after his latest blockbuster.
