Clayface final trailer teases Matt Hagen's chaotic transformation to Gotham's cult favorite villain

Warner Bros. and DC have released the official final trailer for Clayface, a Batman villain in DC Comics. Directed by James Watkins, famous for Eden Lake, The Take, and McMafia, the movie stars Tom Rhys Harries, Eddie Marsan, and Max Minghella. The official trailer for DC's upcoming movie shows Matt Hagen falling from Gotham's Hollywood star to a cult favorite villain.

The trailer follows Matt Hagen, who in the comics was a treasure hunter turned into Clayface, whereas the upcoming DC movie follows the story of Matt Hagen by incorporating the backstory of Basil Karlo. It is shown in this movie that Matt Hagen is an actor and a model who suffers a horrible accident that leads to a disfigurement of his face.

He undergoes a procedure that would restore his face but also give him powers that allow him to shapeshift and change forms. While the character's career and backstory fit perfectly with DC Comics' Basil Karlo, the character is still Matt Hagen. It would be the first time a fan-favorite antagonist, Clayface, has been given a solo movie.

What does the trailer of Clayface reveal?

The trailer starts with Matt Hagen showing his disfigured face after suffering an accident, revealing to the doctor that he wants his life back. The trailer then shows him undergoing an experimental procedure that is supposed to give him his face back.

However, things go wrong as he travels on a plane during turbulence and realizes that his eyelids are melted together. Matt panics and leaves for the restroom during the turbulence. The doctor then reveals that the procedure is causing trouble, as we see a clip of Matt healing through his wounds.

The doctor asks him to learn to control his powers, following which we see Matt using a pair of scissors to cut open his glued eyelids while the plane shakes violently around him. It is hinted that the story would follow Matt Hagen trying to take revenge on the people who gave him these powers, while the police are hot on his tail.

The trailer also shows Hagen attempting to suffocate someone by burning their face on his abdomen. The final trailer ends with Matt showing his Clayface transformation to his doctor, who looks horrified. Additionally, it also hints at Matt's powers of changing his face to someone else in order to accomplish his missions.

Clayface is scheduled to release on October 23, 2026.
