Clown Panic: Breaking down the true story behind Hulu’s Halloween documentary

Clown Panic is Hulu's upcoming Halloween documentary film about the 2016 clown sightings. It was a series of clown sightings that caused hysteria all over the United States and then eventually also in the UK, Australia, and parts of Europe.

The upcoming documentary will cover what happened, how it became a cause of panic, and what the common people went through. Here's the real incident the documentary is based on.

The real story behind Hulu's Clown Panic

As the Clown Panic trailer reveals, the documentary will follow the innumerable clown sightings that occurred in 2016. Initially, a clown sighting was reported at Green Bay, Wisconsin, on August 1, 2016, but that turned out to be a PR stunt for a horror film.

The actual sightings began later that August. The first clown sighting was reported in the latter half of August, 2016, in Greenville County, South Carolina. Multiple children reported that they saw individuals dressed up as clowns, who tried to lure them into the woods. Gradually, more reports began to surface about clowns lingering near schools and woods, trying to lure children.

There were also reports of individuals dressed up as clowns jumping out into traffic, standing in the middle of roads, or chasing cars. Videos of such incidents went viral on the internet, and many people copied the clowns just to get some fame.

At least 12 people were arrested, but none of them were proven to be part of the clown hysteria. A 16-year-old teenager lost his life due to a stabbing that might have been caused by a prowler wearing a mask. The reason behind the frenzy was that there were innumerable clown sightings within an extremely short period.

As one official points out in the Clown Panic trailer:

“It was one thing for there to be a single clown sighting, that wouldn’t have troubled me that much, and then there was a second one … how many more of these are we gonna have?”

Moreover, none of these individuals, who had dressed up as clowns and terrified children and adults alike, were caught. As a result, clown costumes were banned from stores ahead of Halloween. Due to so much fear about clowns, professional clowns, who weren't part of this chaos, suffered due to a lack of employment.

As one professional "good" clown states in the Clown Panic trailer:

“I don’t know any clowns that wanna go and kill a bunch of kids. I mean, that’s your customers.”

Thus, speculations still suggest that the clowns who caused panic and fear in 2016 weren't real clowns and were just individuals dressed up as clowns with intent to scare others. The upcoming documentary will interview people who witnessed the sightings, law enforcement officers, and clowns whose lives were affected by the series of incidents.
