From celebrity lawyers to public defender, D4vd’s switch has sparked rumors about the singer’s financial situation. After being charged with first-degree murder of Celeste Rivas Hernandez, along with several other charges related to this case, the singer, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, will now have a public defender to represent him.
His lawyers, Blair Berk, Regina Peter, and Marilyn Bednarski, spoke to the judge regarding the situation, noting that they will not be representing him. Here are further details of the singer’s switch to a public defender.
D4vd’s financial condition speculated after his switch to public defender sparks rumors
David Anthony Burke’s lawyers, Marilyn Bednarski, Regina Peter, and Blair Berk, reportedly requested the court to grant them permission to withdraw from Burke’s case. As the singer is “qualified for appointed counsel”, he will now be represented by public defenders. In a recent interview with TMZ, the lawyers have noted that they will continue to “support David and his defence” against the “serious” charges that he has received.

The lawyers have also shared their gratefulness to the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office, as they have now taken over the case and will be representing D4vd. However, this sudden change in the singer’s case has sparked several rumors and speculations regarding his economic situation.
The singer had reportedly received about $11 million from his recent record deal. Though the singer’s previous lawyers have not shared the reason for the switch, many have speculated that D4vd has already used up the money he had, which has caused him to switch to a public defender.

The singer has now been given a new attorney for his case. Walid Fouad Kandel is reportedly the new attorney for D4vd. The singer’s case has received immense public attention. According to the prosecutors, David decided to end Hernandez’s life after Hernandez threatened him that she would reveal the truth about their relationship. As Hernandez was 14, a minor, it would have had an impact on the rising music career of the singer.
Texts between the singer and Hernandez have also been reportedly revealed, where Hernandez spoke about abortion. Text messages were also unveiled from 2022 when Hernandez was just 11 years old while D4vd was 17. Though the singer rose to immense fame after his songs such as Romantic Homicide and Here With Me, things took a turn for him after Hernandez’s body was found in his car in 2025.
He was set to go on a tour, which was soon cancelled. According to reports, Hernandez was missing, and her family had also filed a missing complaint. She was later seen on April 3, 2025, at the singer’s house. Five months after this incident, Hernandez’s decomposed remains were found in a Tesla that is owned by the singer. The singer has pleaded not guilty to the case, and a pretrial hearing date is also set. It will take place on October 19 this year.
