Deadpool might be in Avengers: Doomsday after all

Marvel might have quietly confirmed another cast addition for Avengers: Doomsday at SDCC this weekend: Ryan Reynolds's Deadpool. As Marvel was presenting Doomsday, Ryan Reynolds crashed in, wearing the gray Deadpool costume. While the studio did not verbally confirm Reynolds' role in the upcoming Avengers movie, this stunt may hint at his presence.

It was rumored last August that Reynolds had joined the cast of Doomsday, but it wasn't until this week that Marvel may have confirmed that Deadpool might be a part of either Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars, which is also a likely scenario. But as of now, one thing is clear: Deadpool & Wolverine is not the last movie featuring Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson.

The Doomsday team was promoting the upcoming blockbuster to the Hall H crowd when suddenly a Deadpool cosplayer asked the team when he could join the movie. Robert Downey Jr. responded saying that the movie has already wrapped production. This question was the first sign that the cosplayer might have been Reynolds.

Then, the cosplayer further cheekily asked the team if the production team might be working on Avengers: Doomsday reshoots, hinting at his real identity. One of the Russos responded saying that they work on the movie until the movie needs to be distributed for theatrical release. Hearing the answer, the cosplayer plays up his disappointment as he begins to leave the venue.

That's when the Doomsday team on stage dropped the act and revealed that the "cosplayer" is Ryan Reynolds. After that, Kevin Feige continued to present Black Panther III, which is releasing on December 15, 2028.

While we don't know the purpose behind this skit, it probably means that Deadpool is either in Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. Deadpool not being in the upcoming Avengers movie makes sense because the Doomsday trailer hints at a serious and dramatic movie.

The SDCC footage of Doomsday even hints at a Victor Von Doom, who has suffered tragic losses, and therefore, a fourth-wall-breaking character like Deadpool. However, his possible absence in the upcoming MCU epic doesn't mean that we won't get more of Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool.

The last movie featuring the Merc with a Mouth was 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. If Ryan Reynolds were a part of Avengers: Doomsday or next year's Secret Wars, it would be his next appearance. However, even if Deadpool sits out the two Avengers movies, Deadpool & Wolverine will not be the last movie featuring Reynolds' Wade Wilson.

Reynolds himself confirmed at the Fanatics Fest last week that another project featuring the Merc with a Mouth would eventually be released. There, Reynolds pointed at some of his favorite Deadpool writers whose stories he would like to work on:

“There’s a few really deep cuts that I think are missing behind the movies. I think there’s a few deep cuts missing from some of the comics. There’s certainly some stuff that, you know, I love that Fabian Nicieza [co-creator of Deadpool] wrote that is incredible. Gerry Duggan, who was a friend, was an incredible comic writer. There’s stuff upcoming. There’s eventually, you know, remotely another Deadpool film. It’s going to be great.”
