Warner Bros. has released the official trailer for Digger, Alejandro G. Iñárritu's upcoming satirical black comedy and first English-language film since The Revenant, starring Tom Cruise.

Described as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” the official synopsis for the movie reads as follows:

''The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity's savior before the disaster he's unleashed destroys everything.''

The trailer offers the first glimpse of Tom Cruise's titular character, Digger Rockwell, an older oil baron whose company has set off a global ecological disaster. As the most powerful man, Rockwell must prove his worth as humanity's only saviour.

The recently released Digger trailer introduces Tom Cruise in an almost unrecognizable avatar. The Academy Award-nominated star transforms into an older oil baron, sporting a thick Southern accent, a potbelly and thinning white hair, all with the help of flawless makeup and prosthetics. The trailer introduces Cruise's titular character, whose company might have set off an ecological disaster.

As the most powerful man, Digger is the only one who can save humanity from the impending iceberg crisis. The President of the US orders him to save the day.

In one of the scenes from the trailer, the President is briefed about the severity of the situation:

''Mr. President, we're utterly unprotected against a disaster of this magnitude.''

What follows is a series of quick montages as the President and others blame Tom Cruise's character for the mess and ask him to 'dig' them out of it. The titular hero gears up for the dangerous journey ahead, claiming that while he can't control the course of nature (likely referring to the rapidly melting iceberg), he can at least control the narrative.

The Digger trailer concludes as Tom Cruise's character prepares to face the world with the 'hard truth,' as he repeatedly yells, 'Bang. Bang, Bang,' in a humorous sequence.

Meet the Digger cast

Alejandro G. Iñárritu's upcoming movie is led by none other than Tom Cruise, the leading man and the highest-grossing actor of all time. A longtime fan of the director’s breakout 2000 film, Amores Perros, Cruise was impressed with Iñárritu's vision for his titular character and reflected that it took him '40 years' to step into Digger Rockwell's cowboy boots.

Right from the makeup, the prosthetics, the character's physicality and the cowboy boots, Cruise's fans are excited to see the star in this new avatar.

The admiration goes both ways as Alejandro G. Iñárritu has revealed that the film and character have remained his passion project since The Revenant. The Academy Award-winning filmmaker claimed that the film needed Cruise and called his transformation a great surprise for his fans:

“The film needed Tom. We wanted to work together since the beginning of the century...The transformation he went through was astonishing.''

In addition to Tom Cruise, the film stars the Primetime Emmy Award-winning actor John Goodman as the President of the United States. Goodman is best known for his performances in the Monsters, Inc. franchise, Roseanne, Smurfs, Community, Bringing Out the Dead and many more.

Rounding out the movie's cast are stars Sandra Hüller (Requiem), Jesse Plemons (Black Mirror), Riz Ahmed (Jason Bourne), Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man), Sophie Wilde (Talk To Me), Emma D'Arcy (House of the Dragon), Robert John Burke (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Burn Gorman (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) and Pip Torrens (The Crown).

Digger will be released in theaters on October 2.
