Donald Trump's mathematics came under scrutiny because people alleged that he wrongly calculated the difference between 2026 and 1990 and mentioned 125 years while addressing the murder rate in the US. In reality, the president intended to state that the crime rate in America had been decreasing since 1900. If the reference year were 1990, then by now the number of years would be 36, not 125. If it were 1900, then the difference between 2026 and 1900 would be 126, not 125. According to Fox 4 Dallas-Fort Worth, the president said,

"With the murder rate at the lowest level in 125 years, 1990."

Trump made this statement at his Florida midterm campaign rally on October 23, 2026. The rally was held at the Alico Arena on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers.

PolitiFact mentioned that the president had made comments before while addressing the crime rate. According to the news outlet, Trump repeated a version of the same claim at least ten times between January 29 and February 8. He said that the crime rate was now the lowest since the year 1900, which he described as 125 years. One of those times was during an NBC News interview that aired on February 8 before the Super Bowl.

Donald Trump wrongly calculated the year difference while addressing the murder rate in the US

It became very confusing to understand him after the mistake he made while calculating the difference between 2026 and 1990.

During Florida's midterm campaign rally on October 23, 2026, Trump wanted to say that the crime rate in America had been dropping since 1900, but he mentioned 1990 and calculated the year difference as 125, which is wrong when calculated against 2026.

The president made similar comments earlier on January 29, 2026, during a cabinet meeting at the White House. According to Senate Democrats, Trump said,

"It's at the lowest level in 125 years. First in recorded history. It's the lowest in at least 125 years."

Trump added that the drop in crime rate was a very good thing and explained that crime had gone down because many dangerous people were removed from the nation. He mentioned that in some cases those people were so dangerous that they were put in prison to ensure they could not return, and he described the border as very secure and as having record-setting security.

Is Donald Trump's alleged dementia controlling him nowadays?

People are alleging that the president is losing his memory. For example, questions were raised about Trump's cognitive health after he appeared to forget the name of the Republican candidate for governor he was supporting during a rally in Alaska on October 13, 2026. Critics therefore suggested that Trump struggles when calculating the number of years.

Med Page Today explained that Dr. Sean Barbabella knows everything about Trump's health. Critics had pointed out that Trump's medical reports often used superlatives such as saying he was in excellent health, while important measures for judging overall fitness were not included.

Earlier this year, the White House strongly denied claims that Trump had special access to the investigational obesity drug Retatrutide. BBC reported that the president had also been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, and observers had often noted bruising on his hands.
