According to sources who spoke to the Daily Mail, President Donald Trump stayed upstairs in his private White House residence on election night as Democrats won control of both the House and Senate in the 2026 midterm elections.

The Daily Mail reported that Trump watched the election results from his private residence with Susie Wiles and Natalie Harp while other officials gathered in the White House East Room. As the results came in, many Trump officials left the White House election night gathering before it ended.

Sources described a very low mood. As reported by the outlet, one senior official said:

"It's very, very dark in the residence. It's a dark scene."

By 11 pm, a source close to the president said he was "watching Fox News, barely uttering a word and paralyzed into silence."

Donald Trump criticized Fox News on Truth Social for inviting former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to speak on air, calling him the worst mayor in the city's history and accusing him of leaving it in a bad state. He also questioned why de Blasio was commenting on how to run the country and blamed Fox News for giving airtime to Democratic voices. He claimed that the network was partly responsible for the Republican losses.

In another Truth Social post, Trump criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott, saying:

"If Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, hadn’t become a RINO in the last six months of his Political Life, he wouldn’t have lost. He went back to his original formula, and it wasn’t pretty!"

Donald Trump also claimed in another Truth Social post that the Republicans would have won by a large margin if he had been on the ballot through the statement:

"I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE! Thank you for your attention to this matter."

The Daily Mail reported that Trump officials blamed Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for the election losses, with some pointing to the Iran war. The outlet also reported that many Republican officials feared losing their jobs after the midterm losses.
