Dune: Part Three's first trailer is out, and it shows us the consequences of the war we saw in the second installment of the franchise. The film takes place 17 years after Dune: Part Two, and we see Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet) as the emperor of the Known Universe. As the trailer reveals, he will soon realize what he has done to get here, but it will be too late.

The Dune: Part Three trailer also gives us a prolonged look at Hayt (played by Jason Mamoa), who is a ghola of Duncan Idaho but has no memories of Duncan. He is sent to Paul as a gift, but it is yet to be seen how that goes.

Dune: Part Three trailer reveals conspiracies and Paul's regrets

The Dune: Part Three trailer opens with Chani (played by Zendaya) confronting Paul about his actions. A young Paul had promised Chani he wouldn't take power or ask others to fight in his name, but he has done just that. A hurt Chani says,

"You convinced me this was your home. That I was your home!"

The only response we see from Paul is the chilling question he asks Chani:

"What do you know about me?"

From the beginning of the trailer, it is obvious that there's a lingering regret in Paul over what he has done, but he's too far gone to come back now. We then see Hyat arrive at Arrakis, who tells Paul that he thinks Paul is beyond redemption. When Paul asks Hyat the reason for his arrival, he says that he has brought a peace proposal. Paul asks why Hyat thinks he would refuse peace when it's a good thing. Hyat simply says

"Because it's meant to destroy you."

We then see clips of Paul fighting Hyat, and one might get reminded of Duncan Idaho in such scenes. Hyat, who is a resurrection of Duncan, possesses all the physical capabilities of the late swordmaster of House Atreides even if none of his memories. The Dune: Part Three trailer also shows us Scytale (played by Robert Pattinson) and Princess Irulan (played by Florence Pugh) conspiring to overthrow Paul.

Scytale, in indirect words, states that they need to kill Paul to overthrow him and bring upon a change in regime. Irulan thinks it's too risky and says,

"Idiot. You've signed our death warrants."

When Hyat was created, he was programmed to kill Paul. Scytale is the one who will be sending Hyat as a gift to Paul, and while he will hope the ghola does what he's supposed to, Hyat will regain Duncan's memories, and defend Paul instead.

While Hyat will turn out to be a friend rather than a foe to Paul in the long run, there is one challenge he can't overcome. Paul will soon go blind, and as the Dune: Part Three trailer suggests, he might even lose the ability to see the future, a power that sets him apart from others.

We don't get to see much of Alia Atrides (played by Anya Taylor-Joy), but we do see her in a white dress drenched in blood, screaming at Scytale. There's also a clip of of Stilgar (played by Javier Bardem) and his men seeing a beach for the first time. While we don't see much from the scene, the importance of it is evident.

The trailer ends with Paul saying

"Forgive me... for all I've done."

Not only will Paul lose his power of sight, but he will also realize the weight of his actions at a time when it's too late.

Dune: Part Three will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
