Donald Trump promised a $5,000 dividend for American citizens if the Republicans win the midterm elections. At the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas, Texas, the President stated that the promise was based on the United States doing “so well” and making “so much money”.

Trump, 80, continued in his speech:

“Only I can make this promise to you, and here is my promise: If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, because of our… tremendous economic success, like in history we have never had anything like what’s happening, but because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.”

The POTUS added:

“If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000… It will be called the Trump dividend.”

A Fox News reporter covering the segment recalled that Donald Trump previously made a similar promise of a $2,000 dividend.

“We should note, though, it is not the first time he has promised a cash payment like this. He promised Americans a $2,000 rebate during his tariff policy when that was enacted; but so far those $2,000 checks have not materialized.”

MS NOW News anchor Catherine Rampell also made similar observations on X. She wrote in her post:

“Since becoming president again, Trump has promised: -$5000 stimulus checks via ‘DOGE dividend’ -$2000 stimulus checks via ‘tariff dividend’ -$1000+ checks via ‘savings’ from expiring ACA subsidies -$5000 ‘dividend’ if Rs win midterms. No checks have been issued.”

Exploring Donald Trump’s past monetary promises to Americans

Last year, after Donald Trump began his second term as the President, his former associate Elon Musk suggested a “DOGE dividend” worth $5,000. According to public records, the idea never got implemented.

In April 2025, Trump told reporters after announcing tariffs that he would use “trillions and trillions of dollars” to “reduce our taxes and pay down our national debt.”

He echoed similar sentiments three months later, adding:

“We have so much money coming in, we're thinking about a little rebate, but the big thing we want to do is pay down debt. We're thinking about a rebate.”

Later, in a November 2025 Truth Social post, Trump promised $2,000 to working-class Americans:

“People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the Richest, Most Respected Country in the World, With Almost No Inflation, and A Record Stock Market Price. 401k’s are the highest EVER. We are taking in Trillions of Dollars and will soon begin paying down our ENORMOUS DEBT, $37 trillion. Record Investment in the USA; plants and factories going up all over the place. A dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high-income people!) will be paid to everyone.”

In a follow-up post, Donald promised that any leftover money will be used to pay off the “national debt.”

“All money left over from the $2,000 payments made to low- and middle-income U.S. Citizens, from the massive Tariff Income pouring into our Country from foreign countries, which will be substantial, will be used to SUBSTANTIALLY PAY DOWN NATIONAL DEBT. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT.”

U.S. media sources reveal the $2,000 payments were not made. Not only that, but at the time, PolitiFact reported that the tariffs were projected to generate less than “trillions” annually, making it difficult to pay each American $2,000.

Back then, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that he was yet to speak with the President about the promised dividend. However, it could come “in lots of forms, in lots of ways.”

“You know, it could be just the tax decreases that we are seeing on the president's agenda. You know, no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security, deductibility of auto loans. So, you know, those are substantial deductions,” Bessent shared in a statement.

Before that, he said the administration was “laser focused on paying down the debt”, and the tariffs would “pay off our deficits.” In an August interview with CNBC, Scott further observed:

"I think we're going to bring down the deficit-to-GDP. We'll start paying down debt and then at a point that can be used as an offset to the American people."

It is noteworthy that a tariff dividend would need congressional approval, which they also declined to grant while approving the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

According to PBS, over a million U.S. military service members received a “warrior dividend” worth $1,776 in December 2025.
