From $911M to $1.4B? The Odyssey is on course for a historic box office run

When Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey was first announced, one could tell it would be a success. However, after all the backlash the director faced for his casting choices, audiences doubted how good the film would really be or how well it would perform.

Luckily for Nolan and everyone behind the film, it has grossed $911 million within the first three weeks of release. Given its performance so far, the film is predicted to cross the $1.4 billion mark soon.

The Odyssey might just become Christopher Nolan's highest-grossing film

Christopher Nolan faced a lot of criticism ahead of the release of The Odyssey. He was criticized for not casting Greek actors in a Greek adaptation and for casting Lupita Nyong'o and Elliot Page, actors many people thought were not the right fit for the film. Viewers were also doubtful about whether his adaptation would be respectful of Homer's original story.

However, audiences have loved the film and Nolan's take on the epic poem. The film follows Odysseus as he tries to get home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. However, it takes him years to go back home as he and his soldiers keep facing dangers at sea. While we see Odysseus' struggles at sea, his wife Penelope tries her best to dodge suitors who ask for her hand and want to rule Ithaca.

Despite all the pre-release criticism, the Nolan-directed has done tremendously well in theaters. On its opening weekend, the film grossed $264.1 million worldwide and $346 million in the first week. The film's global collection then increased to $640 million after the second week. Now, as the film completes three weeks in theaters, it has grossed $911 million and is being predicted to soon cross the $1.4 billion mark.

The Odyssey, along with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, have grossed the highest collective weekend ever. Together, the films have grossed over $430 million, breaking a record Avengers: Endgame had set back in 2019. While Spider-Man: Brand New Day has done extremely well in its first weekend, The Odyssey's revenue has been extremely impressive given it's the film's third week in theaters.

Even on its third weekend, the Christopher Nolan-directed film has grossed $51 million. The film will be running in all theaters for at least two more weeks and in specialized IMAX 70mm formats till September 16, 2026, due to high demand. According to predictions, if the film continues to perform the way it has been, it will cross the $1.4 billion mark soon and might eventually get close to the $2 billion mark by the time September 16, 2026, comes around.

The film will then also become the highest-grossing film directed by Christopher Nolan. Currently, The Dark Knight Rises is the highest-grossing film of Nolan's, which brought in a box office revenue of approximately $1.084 billion. However, The Odyssey's generational run suggests that the film is on its way to becoming Nolan's highest-grossing film.
