From Batman to Bateman: Why Christian Bale commands respect among Hollywood legends

Christian Bale has built a solid reputation for disappearing into the characters he portrays. The Batman actor started young and took on challenging roles as his career progressed. But Bale's breakout role came in Mary Harron's 2000 comedy-horror film American Psycho, which saw the actor transform into investment banker/serial killer Patrick Bateman. As the film's villainous protagonist who led a double life as a wealthy Wall Street banker and a serial killer, Bateman's physicality was important for Christian Bale. For his role in American Psycho, Bale took one of the most restrictive diets of his career, reportedly consisting only of lean protein, no sugar, good fats, and low carbs.

Bale's commitment to his roles earned a humorous response from actor Joaquin Phoenix. While picking up his Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2020, Phoenix gave a humorous shoutout to Bale in his acceptance speech:

"You commit to your roles in ways that I can only dream of. You never turn in a bad performance. It's infuriating. I wish you would. One time, just suck once. It'd be great, okay?"

Bale certainly received the ultimate acting compliment when even the Joker wanted him to “suck once.”

Bale's shocking transformation into Bateman was not a one-time thing. The actor also transformed into emaciated insomniac Trevor Reznik in Brad Anderson's 2004 psychological thriller The Machinist. The actor lost 60 pounds in four months to portray Trevor, through a reportedly strict diet of only water, an apple, and one cup of coffee per day.

Five months were all Christian Bale took to transform from an emaciated machinist into a hulking superhero. In addition to portraying a beloved superhero in a Christopher Nolan film, Bale had the added pressure of building muscle after his massive weight loss for The Machinist. The actor shocked the world with yet another transformation, achieved through a diet of pizza and ice cream and lifting heavy weights in the gym.

The world was in awe when Christian Bale debuted as the Caped Crusader in his black suit in Nolan's Batman Begins. Bale's co-stars Gary Oldman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt couldn't help but praise him for his turn as Batman. During a press release for The Dark Knight Rises, Gordon-Levitt credited Bale for Batman's bulky exterior in Nolan's film trilogy:

"Yeah, when Christian puts on that suit, it's really there. There's no added digital anything. That just looks like a movie when he's got it on. He looks like a legend. He doesn't look like a person anymore."

Gary Oldman added:

"There's something that's quite forbidding about him when he's on the set with you. He looks like the Batman."

The Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy turned Bale into a global star, but the role also showcased another side of his craft. He had to distinguish Bruce Wayne from Batman while giving both identities emotional depth. Rather than relying solely on the character's superhero status, Bale helped ground Bruce in grief, guilt, and an obsessive desire for justice.

Bale's ability to slip into any character with ease even shocked his Ford v Ferrari co-star Matt Damon, who couldn't help but praise him for his craft. Speaking with Conan O'Brien, Damon revealed that Bale refused to get out of his character even when the cameras were not rolling:

"Christian is a good example of somebody who'll stay in the voice and in the physicality of the character for the entire time."

Christian Bale's name now carries a particular expectation in Hollywood. The transformations may make headlines. But it's the discipline behind them that has helped turn him into one of Hollywood's most respected actors.
