Donald Trump’s reaction to the Republican Party’s disappointing performance in the 2026 midterm elections has taken a strange turn, and his social media activity is drawing attention.

According to the BBC's live updates on the 2026 midterms, Democrats took control of Congress and Republicans faced a major political setback. The results raised serious questions about Trump's political influence and the direction of his administration. But the President has found a strange way to vent his frustration over the Republicans' midterm loss.

The President's online activity on Truth Social has added another layer to the post-election drama. From a red MAGA cap with the word VETO written on it to calling Bill de Blasio a 'lunatic', the online activity has garnered attention. In a post targeted at FOX News and de Blasio, Trump wrote:

"Why does FoxNews have Bill de Blasio, the Worst Mayor in the History of New York City, on air, ranting and raving like a Lunatic? He left the City in disgrace, and the damage he caused was incalculable — It has never been the same, and now he’s telling us how to run America..."

Among a string of Truth Social posts, the President's red veto cap is going viral. According to The Independent, the single word appears to be a threat and a reference to the President's power to reject Congress's legislation, a power Trump has exercised a total of 12 times during his two terms.

In a recent phone interview with FOX News, Trump reiterated the power of the President's right to veto:

“The power of veto is one of the stronger powers that a president has, and they'll send over things that are insane, and I'll veto them. And after a couple of months of vetoes, they'll call and they'll say, "How do we get this stuff done?" And we'll work together."

While Congress has the power to override the President's veto by two-thirds majorities, most attempts have failed in the past two years.

Shifting blame

After widespread Republican defeats in the 2026 midterm elections, the President and his administration explicitly deflected blame away from his leadership. They redirected it toward flawed GOP candidates and voter turnout dynamics.

In another post on Truth Social, Trump repeatedly asserted that the losses occurred because his name was not in front of the voters:

"I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE! Thank you for your attention to this matter."

Additionally, the President specifically targeted prominent Republicans who lost, such as Texas Governor Greg Abbott:

"If Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, hadn’t become a RINO in the last six months of his Political Life, he wouldn’t have lost. He went back to his original formula, and it wasn’t pretty!"

Trump has attempted to distance himself from the Republican setback in the midterms, but his online activity on Truth Social has put his confrontational political style in the spotlight.
