His decision came amid the ongoing trade war between the USA and Canada.Free online web mapping service MapQuest rejected the rebranding and tweeted:“We’re not changing it.”MapQuest also launched a campaign called “Rename Lake Ontario” and posted their suggestions, including Lake Oh Canada, Lake Eh, Lake Neighbors to the North, Lake Double-Double, and even Lake MapQuest, among others.The MapQuest X account further shared an image of Lake Ontario renamed as “Lake Are We Doing This Again?” and has asked users to come up with their own alternatives.“We're not changing the name of Lake Ontario. Name it whatever you want at your leisure: [link]. (tag us so we can see your work),” the caption read.The company also responded to mixed reactions in an August 30 post:“We are aware that Lake Ontario is being correctly labeled on our map.”MapQuest was seemingly referring to the time when they didn’t change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in January 2025 after Trump signed an executive order for the same immediately after taking office for his second term as the President. Back then, they launched a similar campaign called “Name Your Own Gulf.”On August 29, Google released a blog post announcing that U.S. users of Google Maps would henceforth see Lake America. The post reads:“The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has formally changed the name for ‘Lake Ontario’ to ‘Lake America’ in the United States. Since we update Google Maps to reflect name changes in official government sources, which is GNIS for the U.S., people using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Lake America,’ those in Canada will continue to see ‘Lake Ontario,’ and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names.”The tech giant added:“These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now.”Apple Maps followed suit and changed Lake Ontario to Lake America on September 1. According to Bloomberg, the app shows Lake America for people in the United States, Lake Ontario for Canadian users, and both names for those outside both countries. The rebranding came on the first day of Apple’s new CEO John Ternus’ tenure.Apple told Reuters on Tuesday that its decision followed the change to the name of the water body in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System.Both Google Maps and Apple Maps previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether Waze, founded in 2006 as FreeMap Israel, officially changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, as different users report different names online. However, it is noteworthy that the app rebranded in 2009 and has been a subsidiary of Google (acquired for $1 billion) since 2013.Waze previously sparked controversy and calls for boycott in early 2025 when reports emerged that the company contributed $1 million to the Trump-Vance inaugural fund and an undisclosed amount to the White House’s new ballroom.When Trump signed the executive order on August 27, he asked the U.S. Board of Geographic Names and the Department of the Interior to implement the name change within 30 days.Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the name change and said they’d call it Lake Ontario “then, now, and always.”For the unaware, the water body borders New York in the USA and Ontario in Canada. Its name can be traced back to the 17th century indigenous population of the region. Since the early 20th century, it has been jointly controlled by both countries, adhering to the Boundary Waters Treaty.
