George Lucas, the American filmmaker and philanthropist, has an estimated net worth of $9 billion in 2026, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Lucas has been active in the industry for over six decades now. He married Marcia Griffith in 1969, and their relationship lasted for around fourteen years before their divorce in 1983.

As per TMZ, Star Wars editor Marcia Lucas died on May 27 at the age of eighty, as confirmed by the family's spokesperson. She passed away after battling metastatic cancer, according to reports. George Lucas and Marcia Lucas, who first crossed paths while assisting film editor Verna Fields, worked together on many hit movies, including THX-1138, American Graffiti, and Star Wars.

The recent passing of Marcia Lucas has brought attention to the filmmaker's life and wealth. Let's have a closer look at George Lucas's net worth.

George Lucas, with an estimated net worth of $9 billion, is considered one of the richest filmmakers in the world, ranking just behind a few like Steven Spielberg, who has an estimated net worth of $11.5 billion.

Lucas is the founder of Lucasfilm, along with companies like Industrial Light & Magic, THX, and LucasArts. He is also the creator of the Indiana Jones and Star Wars franchises, through which he has reportedly earned $12 billion globally. Star Wars was developed with a budget of about eleven million dollars, which eventually became a worldwide hit.

His other successful early film, American Graffiti, came from an initial spend of just $777k and went on to earn around $140 million worldwide, giving a financial life to Lucas's career and wealth.

Just a year before selling Lucasfilm, Star Wars reportedly made three billion dollars just by selling the toys, showing how famous the franchise had become.

However, in 2012, he transferred ownership of Lucasfilm to The Walt Disney Company for $4.1 billion in a mix of cash and Disney shares as part of the agreement.

Speaking about the deal, Lucas said he had already started thinking about his future plans, including building a museum, focusing on experimental films, and changing direction in his personal life regarding the baby and marriage.

Understanding that his life was going on a different track and the large amount he spent on the last few movies, he thought that it was not fair to the people who worked there or the company.

By 2021, the value of those shares had increased to over seven billion dollars, adding to his overall net worth. Lucas's source of wealth is also a result of smart moves, as the filmmaker requested to keep the merchandising and sequel rights in exchange for a lower salary, which made far more money than a one-time payment.

As of now, George Lucas owns multiple luxury properties, including his most recent mansion in London that he reportedly bought for $52 million. He also owns a Chicago penthouse and the Château Margüi winery estate in France.

However, this also leads to the question of why his net worth is less as of today even after a successful career. It's because he has donated a large amount to charities over the years by supporting causes like the Obama Foundation, cancer research, and After School Matters.
