Understanding the timeline of Gervonta Davis’ legal issues

Gervonta Davis has faced multiple legal issues over the year, primarily involving domestic battery allegations and a notable hit-and-run case.

The first legal case against the 31-year-old former three-weight champion dates back to 2017, when an arrest warrant was issued for first-degree aggravated assault. This stems from an incident where he allegedly punched his childhood friend, Anthony Wheeler of Baltimore in the head with a gloved fist. Although Wheeler pressed charges against Davis, they were eventually dropped.

In February 2019, an arrest warrant was issued against the WBA lightweight champion in connection with an alleged altercation at the Tysons Galleria Mall in McLean.

The incident occurred when Gervonta Davis had a dispute with a man at an ATM inside the mall. When police arrived, he allegedly argued with officers and shoved one, which led to charges of one count of misdemeanour assault. However, the case was later dismissed.

A year later, Gervonta Davis was charged with simple battery and domestic violence in Florida. The incident occurred during a charity celebrity basketball game at the University of Miami's Watsco Center.

A video that went viral showed Davis approaching his former girlfriend as he forcefully grabbed her neck and pulled her out of her seat. He was moving towards an exit while they argued.

The woman in the video was his former partner, Andretta Smothers, the mother of his daughter. Davis has three children. Gervanni Davis is his eldest daughter, whom he shares with Smothers. His second daughter is Giovanna Thalia with his longtime girlfriend, Vanessa Posso. His youngest son, Gianni Bryant Davis, whom he also shares with Posso.

According to a report on ESPN, Coral Gables police said in a statement:

“As a result of an ongoing investigation after being notified through social media and the victim, on Feb. 1, 2020, [Davis] was observed battering his former girlfriend [with] whom [they] have a child together. [Davis] surrendered himself to Coral Gables police detectives assigned to the case.”

However, Davis publicly denied the allegations that he had hit his girlfriend, as alleged in the reports. He posted a statement on his Instagram stories, which read:

“I never once hit her, yea I was aggressive and told her come on ... that's the mother of my child I would never hurt her.”

In November 2020, Davis was involved in a hit-and-run crash in Baltimore, injuring four people, including a pregnant woman. It led to Davis facing fourteen charges. In September 2022, a judge declined to approve a plea deal in the case and instead opted for 60 days of house arrest.

In December 2022, Davis was arrested for misdemeanor domestic battery after allegedly slapping a woman, but charges were dropped in May 2023.

Besides this, Gervonta Davis was involved in a choking incident in September 2025 refering to the allegations made by his then-ex-girlfriend Courtney Rossel.
