“Had a stunt team come in”: Resident Evil’s Austin Abrams reveals the stunt he wasn’t permitted to do

In Resident Evil (2026), Austin Abrams stars as Bryan, a medical courier, who has to take a package to Raccoon General Hospital in Raccoon City late at night. On his way, he encounters zombies and has to make his way out alive.

While Abrams has had to run a lot in the film and is also seen in action scenes, he has revealed that there is one stunt he wasn't permitted to do.

One Austin Abrams stunt we see in Resident Evil was done by a stuntman

In Resident Evil, Bryan agrees to deliver a medical package to Raccoon City despite it being outside the zone because it pays double. However, on his way, he encounters a zombie. Without giving any spoilers, Bryan arrives at a farmhouse looking for help but then has to leave said farmhouse.

As the Resident Evil trailer already revealed, Bryan is not able to leave the farmhouse through the door because of the zombies. He then jumps from the farmhouse's second floor onto the ground to flee. In an interview with Variety, Austin Abrams was asked how that particular stunt was filmed. In response, he said:

"That is one of the only ones that we had a stunt team come in and do. Other than that, it felt it was important to do everything."

Thus, it was not that Abrams hadn't done any stunts in the film before and therefore lacked experience. It was just this particular one that he wasn't allowed to do himself. Explaining the situation, Abrams added:

"That was one where, well, I don’t know what to say they just wouldn’t let me do it. But our great stunt guy that did it, he didn’t have any wires on him or anything. He just took the fall. I remember him afterwards saying he really hit his tailbone pretty hard."

The fact that the stuntman did it without any harness or wires is probably why Abrams wasn't allowed to do it in the first place. It looks like the scene had to be an authentic jump from a high point, and doing it with wires wouldn't give it that look.

The creatives behind Resident Evil obviously couldn't risk Abrams' life by making him jump without any protection. Thus, it made sense to bring in a professional stuntman for the jump. While it is unfortunate that the stuntman hurt himself a little, it is something that is common in his line of work, though not so much in Abrams' line of work. Irrespective of who did it, the jump came out as intended, and that's all that matters.

Besides Abrams, Resident Evil also stars Zach Cherry as Dave, Kali Reis as Dr. Maxine, Paul Walter Hauser as Carl, Johnno Wilson as Max, and Emily Piggford as Dr. Maria Stokes, among others.

The film is written by Zach Cregger and Shay Hatten and is based on a Capcom game of the same name. Cregger has also directed and produced the film. The production companies behind the film are Columbia Pictures, Constantin Film, Davis Films, Subconscious, Vertigo Entertainment, and PlayStation Productions.

Resident Evil was released on September 18, 2026, and is playing in theaters.
