“Have to be ready”: Andi Peters breaks silence after racist comment made by Harry Potter’s Miriam Margolyes

Andi Peters and Miriam Margolyes have been making headlines following their appearance on This Morning. On September 4, a day after their appearance, television presenter Jeremy Vine uploaded a video on his Instagram where Miriam Margolyes of Harry Potter can be seen talking to Andi Peters.

The two found themselves in an uncomfortable exchange on This Morning after Margolyes made comments about Peters' race and skin tone. Margolyes used a racially offensive term, "high yalla," a dated and often offensive slang word.

At one point during their conversation, Peters pointed to his earpiece and said that they're getting "nervous," referring to the producers. The exchange later drew attention online, with Jeremy Vine sharing his reaction to the same through the caption:

"This is seriously nerve-wracking. No filter. @andipeters dealt with it brilliantly, but note at the end — "they're getting nervous" [the producers]"

Responding in the comments, Andi wrote:

"Thanks JV. As you know we have to be ready for ANYTHING!!!"

What happened between Andi Peters and Miriam Margolyes on This Morning?

In the video uploaded by Jeremy Vine, Miriam Margolyes, who played Professor Sprout in Harry Potter, asked Andi Peters what accent would be normal for him, adding:

"What are you?"

Peters replied to her question, saying he was himself, to which she asked him about his mixed-race background, referring to his Black father and white mother.

Andi Peters corrected her, saying both his parents are Black, and joked about her comments, asking whether he looked like a lighter shade than usual and wondering what had been put on him. After listening to Andi, Miriam said a racially offensive term, adding that the term is used in America.

Andi joked that he did not even know there were different shades, while Miriam replied that there were. Andi then pointed to his earpiece and said that the producers were getting nervous, to which Miriam told them not to be nervous, adding that they welcome everyone and inclusion was what she wanted to talk about in her book.

Miriam was talking about her new book, Miriam's Full English: A Grand Tour of All Our Best Bits, published on September 3.

The clip was later removed from the show's ITVX recording. However, Jeremy Vine later shared the clip on Instagram, mentioning Andi, and shared his reaction.

For now, Andi's comment on Jeremy Vine's post remains his only public response, with his use of "ANYTHING" drawing attention as the clip continues to gain attention online. Additionally, ITV has not released any statement on the matter as of now.

However, this was not the first time Margolyes has been in the spotlight over a comment made on a TV appearance. Miriam Margolyes showed regret in her 2023 memoir over asking the late Friends actor Matthew Perry if he was an alcoholic during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show. She later said that she wished she had not asked him the question, adding that it was one of the few times she did not "mesh" with another guest on the show.
