Hayden Panettiere's friends allegedly had no knowledge of the late actor reuniting with ex Brian Hickerson

Hayden Panettiere's untimely death at the age of 36 has been shocking news for her industry colleagues, friends, and fans. The actress passed away on August 16, 2026, and her official cause of death is yet to be determined. Hayden Panettiere has publicly talked about her struggles with addiction and postpartum depression, which also led to many thinking she died of an overdose.

Moreover, first responders also treated the case as an overdose when they first encountered her unresponsive body. However, something else she had struggled with was the complicated relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and she had reportedly reunited with him, something that her best friends did not know.

Hayden Panettiere's friends were in the dark about her reunion with Brian Hickerson

Hayden Panettiere had a on-and-off relationship with Brian Hickerson since 2018. In 2019, Hickerson was arrested after he and Panettiere had an alleged unpleasant confrontation. While the charges were dismissed later that year, Hickerson was allegedly charged with domestic violence. He was again arrested in February 2020 for yet another altercation with Panettiere and allegedly for domestically abusing her.

Hayden Panettiere had even spoken out about the incident and obtained a restraining order against Brian Hickerson in July 2020. Speaking about the abuse, Panettiere had made a post on Instagram saying,

“I am coming forward with the truth about what happened to me with the hope that my story will empower others in abusive relationships to get the help they need and deserve. I am prepared to do my part to make sure this man never hurts anyone again. I’m grateful for my support system, which helped me find the courage to regain my voice and my life."

Thus, it is safe to say that Hayden Panettiere did not have the most healthy or pleasant relationship with Brian Hickerson. In 2021, Hickerson was sentenced to 45 days in jail for two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend, which he did not contest to.

Despite their volatile past, Panettiere and Hickerson were seen together publicly in March, 2026. They were seen together at LAX airport and Panettiere was walking on crutches as Hickerson helped her. However, as Page Six reports, Panettiere's closest friends had no idea that their friend has reunited with her abusive ex-boyfriend.

One source told the outlet,

“If Brian was back in her life, then it was something she was hiding because she wasn’t speaking about it with many of her friends,”

They also added,

“If you’ve gone through some dark times with people, and spoken about it, then there can be shame if you get back together with that same person, so maybe that was why she hadn’t mentioned it to us.”

It seems that this source was a close friend of Hayden Panettiere, and they had no idea of the actress' reunion with Brian Hickerson. The source does understand why the actress might have chosen to keep this update hidden, given the couple's history. However, the fact that Panettiere hid her reunion with Hickerson from even her friends raises questions about her mental health and well-being.

To keep something to oneself for a month or two is alright, but to not share something like this with even their closest friends is alarming. Moreover, as TMZ reported, Hayden Panettiere had traveled from LA to South Carolina by flight with Hickerson a day before she died. Hickerson had also admitted in May 2026 that he had been abusive towards Panettiere.

Brian Hickerson has not yet given a statement regarding Panettiere's death or his last interaction with her. Upon initial investigation, authorities rule out foul play, but Hayden Panettiere's death is still under investigation, and an official reason for death is expected to be revealed soon.
