Hayden Panettiere's heartbreaking final confession about addiction, motherhood and giving up custody of her daughter

Hayden Panettiere, known for her roles in Nashville as Juliette Barnes and Heroes as Claire Bennet, died at the age of 36 on August 16, 2026, in South Carolina. The reason for the death remains a mystery as of now. Panettiere's father, in a statement to ABC News, shared the devastating news and asked for privacy.

Panettiere began her career as a child actor, appearing in commercials. She bagged a role in ABC soap opera One Life to Live before joining the CBS soap opera, Guiding Light, in 1996. Her career spanned almost three decades, during which she appeared in several projects, including Remember the Titans, Scream 4, and Raising Helen, to name a few.

Panettiere had always been candid about her struggles. In her memoir titled This Is Me: A Reckoning, published in May 2026, she gave a rare glimpse into the dark secrets of Hollywood and the burden of being a child star. Hayden Panettiere shared she suffered from body dysmorphia in her late teens. She explained how paparazzi swarmed her and made appalling remarks to get a reaction from her. At this point, one of the publicists suggested her to take a 'happy pill' to help her perform on the red carpet. However, that apparently turned to d*** addiction.

Panettiere met Wladimir Klitschko, a Ukrainian boxer, at a party in Los Angeles when she was 19. Even though the boxer was 13 years older, they eventually started dating. Five years later, they welcomed their daughter, Kaya, in December 2014. After giving birth, the actor faced severe postpartum depression. In a podcast with Jay Shetty, she revealed that she was not hostile towards her child, but she wasn't connecting with the child as she should be. She added that she started drinking to suppress her emotions (via BBC),

"I was full of stress and anxiety all the time."

Panettiere said that Klitschko helped her seek treatment. However, when their daughter turned three, he apparently told Panettiere that he was worried for his daughter and requested full custody of their daughter

The Scream actor sought legal help to keep her daughter but eventually agreed to give up custody. She added that it was not an easy decision, but she was going through a tough time in her life. She also joined rehab to help with the addiction. However, she remained involved in her daughter's life and in her memoir mentioned that the mother-daughter duo shared a close bond.

Hayden Panettiere was in an on-off relationship with Brian Hickerson from 2018-2022. However, their relationship turned toxic and abusive. Panettiere said that she was physically a*****ted. In 2021, Hickerson was sentenced to 45 days in prison for domestic abuse. In 2023, Panettiere lost her younger brother Jansen due to a heart condition.

Panettiere also shared how she was se*ually harassed by a TV executive in 2008 at a party. Additionally, she also accused an Oscar-winning actor and director of allegedly exposing himself to her.

Panettiere passed away at the age of 36 on August 16, 2026, in a home in Greenville, South Carolina, where she was found unresponsive. The police did not suspect foul play during the initial investigation.
