Hayley Atwell teases a darker, more vulnerable Peggy Carter in Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel fans are waiting for the release of Avengers: Doomsday in theatres on December 18 this year. People have already started gossiping about the movie's plot on the internet and many also want to know the future story of Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers after their emotional ending in Avengers: Endgame.

Actress Hayley Atwell has recently shared a new update at San Diego Comic-Con about the popular couple and further hinted that their path in the upcoming film may turn out differently than the audience's expectations. The star reportedly confirmed that she will return as Peggy Carter and hinted that Marvel fans might experience an unexpected twist in the plot.

The last scene of Avengers: Endgame shows Peggy and Steve finally dancing together after Captain America travels back in time and chooses to spend his life with first love. For Hayley, the scene was filmed quietly in one afternoon back in 2017. She had received a call only a few weeks earlier and was told that it would be the ending of the long story that Marvel Studios had been building since 2008.

Hayley Atwell teases Peggy's new journey in Avengers: Doomsday at SDCC

After appearing as Peggy Carter in five movies and two seasons of ABC’s Agent Carter, Endgame could mark Atwell’s last time playing Peggy in live action. But now she has again confirmed that she will return as the same character in th Avengers: Doomsday. The actress opened up at SDCC.

"All I can say is that things are not what they seem at times. The World has turned upside down; it’s described like an existential crisis of an epic movie. The stakes could not be higher for everyone, particularly for Peggy and Steve. We’re going to be seeing a much more ruffled Peggy than we have before."

The star explained that she always wanted each time she played her character to feel different from the last. She further added that Avengers: Doomsday will continue that concept by showing a more developed version of Peggy.

Hayley Atwell further described that people often imagine a happy ending, but the reality is that once two characters come together, they must live a real life. She noted that much of their journey has been shaped by crossed signals, mismatched timelines, missed opportunities, and constant longing. She further added,

"What actually happens when you get together? Maybe they hate each other. Maybe like, oh, he's so annoying. You again."

Atwell further emphasized that their chapter remains a lasting love story and fans continue to enjoy watching them. She admitted that she felt humbled by the audience’s response and realled asking herself,

"Is it a nomad, is he? What happens after the dance?"

Those questions led to long discussions, which eventually shaped a new structure for the story. In Avengers: Doomsday, Peggy is shown as the adult in the relationship, the dependable one. However, Atwell pointed out that when an actor plays the straight character who is always longing, the role can sometimes feel slightly dry.
