U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders took to social media reacting to a photo of President Donald Trump dining with Google co-founder Sergey Brin at a MAGA Inc. dinner at Mar-a-Lago.

The 85-year-old took to X, calling out the photo as “obscene”, which circulated after reports that Brin was seated near Trump at the event. His post read:

“When Sergey Brin, the 4th richest man alive, isn’t dining with Trump, what’s he doing? He’s spending $138 million against California’s 5% billionaire wealth tax. He’d rather working class kids die because they can’t afford healthcare than pay his fair share in taxes. Obscene.”

This fits Sanders’ ongoing criticism of tech billionaires and their political influence. He has repeatedly highlighted Brin’s opposition to California’s Proposition 40, a November 2026 ballot measure that would impose a one-time 5% tax on California residents worth $1 billion or more.

Bernie Sanders calls out Trump for dining with Sergey Brin

Bernie Sanders has called out US President Donald Trump after a photo of him with Sergey Brin went viral on October 18, 2026. Brin is a computer scientist and businessman who co-founded Google with Larry Page.

The photo, shared by account @Acyn, shows Trump seated with Brin at a MAGA Inc. dinner at Mar-a-Lago. This is not the first time that Sanders has called out Brin, who has amassed a massive fortune. The criticism centered on Sergey Brin’s large donations to defeat the measure while his net worth grew substantially, with Sanders framing it as prioritizing personal wealth over funding healthcare for working-class people.

In May 2026, Sanders posted that Brin’s wealth had doubled to around $311 billion since Trump’s election and that Brin was spending $57 million to oppose the tax. He wrote in an X post:

“Google founder Sergey Brin's wealth has DOUBLED to $311 billion since Trump's election. Now he’s spending $57M to oppose a 5% billionaires' wealth tax in California. He’d rather millions lose healthcare than pay his fair share in taxes. This kind of arrogance is unacceptable.”

SEIU-UHW Vice President Debru Carthan also criticized Sergey Brin over his spending against California’s proposed one-time 5% billionaire wealth tax (Proposition 40). According to a report in the LA Times, he said in a statement:

“California billionaire Sergey Brin would rather spend $100 million to fund a shady opposition campaign than simply pay his fair share in taxes so millions of Californians don’t lose their healthcare. That’s shameful. Billionaires already pay much lower tax rates than what working families pay out of every paycheck.”

Bernie Sanders has remained a long-standing and vocal opponent of Trump for years. Sanders has characterized Trump as “the most dangerous president in the history of the United States,” citing his economic policies, his disregard for democratic norms and the emerging right-wing oligarchy.

Speaking during an interview with NPR, Sanders said:

“Well, when I talked about oligarchy over the years, I think for some people it was an abstraction...people understand you have to be blind not to see that what we have today is a government of the billionaires, by the billionaires and for the billionaires.”

Sanders kicked off a western swing of his "Fighting Oligarchy" tour, launching the highly publicized series of West Coast rallies. During this tour, which drew crowds from states like Nevada, Arizona, Colorado and California, Sanders accused Trump of accelerating a shift towards an authoritarian society and moving the country into a literal oligarchy.
