On Wednesday, lead CNN Washington anchor Jake Tapper called out Donald Trump for feigning ignorance about Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign ad featuring his Ohio gubernatorial opponent Dr. Amy Acton’s estranged mother.“It’s Vivek’s ad. And he seems to know quite a bit about the ad. So, the president and the vice president are standing by this woman who stood by an alleged accused child r****t and calling the child who was r***d, now a woman, Amy Acton, calling her a liar to win an election,” Tapper stated.Reporters asked Trump about the ad outside of the White House, and he claimed it “didn’t have anything to do” with Ramaswamy. The POTUS added:“The fact is, I know nothing about it, but I hear the mother went very rogue on the daughter — doesn’t have a lot of respect for the daughter — and I think the mother is a witness to things also, so who knows? And you have to figure that out. It’s a very unusual situation to have a mother hate a daughter that much.”Vice President JD Vance declined to condemn the ad earlier in the week. However, Vance said he was “disgusted” by pushback Vivek was facing from fellow Republicans.More about Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign ad amid Jake Tapper’s criticism of Trump and VanceVivek Ramaswamy’s campaign ad features Dr. Amy Acton’s estranged biological mother, Donna Arthur, who called Acton “a liar” and insinuated that she has mental health issues. On Tuesday, Amy Acton told local Ohio publication Spectrum News:“I won’t normalize somebody who has said that my childhood is just something I’m complaining about, who today just released an ad using my birth mother, who I was removed from at the age of 12 for severe abuse and neglect, and s****l abuse.”According to HuffPost, Donna Arthur lost custody of her children when her husband and Amy’s stepfather, Cledith Arthur, was arrested, charged with, and indicted for allegedly r****g her in 1978. Acton was 12 years old at the time, and the abuse allegedly happened between December 1976 and April 1978. Amy’s biological father alerted the authorities. The ad faced severe backlash from both Republicans and Democrats. Republican Senator from Ohio Jon Husted told The Associated Press:“I would not have run that ad.”Husted’s Democratic opponent Sherrod Brown called the ad “disgusting.” Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley also tweeted that Vivek Ramaswamy is a “bad guy,” adding:“It’s a shame he continues to get away with it.”Meanwhile, Ramaswamy not only created the ad but also continued to promote it by spending $4 million.During his recent Ohio campaign rally, JD Vance said that his “concern” is not whether the ad is appropriate but rather helping Republicans win the midterm election.“Politics is a tough business… I’m a little bit disgusted when I see Republicans across the country who are whining more about that advertisement than they are about what the congressional Democrats and other Democrats want to do to the United States of America,” Vance stated.Ahead of the rally, the U.S. Vice President accused Dr. Amy Acton of “lying about every single one of her positions.”Acton posted a campaign video on Tuesday featuring her brother, who spoke about the homelessness and abuse his politician sister faced during her childhood. Both Trump and the Ohio Republican Party have endorsed Ramaswamy for the governor's race. Vivek previously clashed with Trump in the 2024 presidential election primaries before withdrawing and supporting Trump.
