Russell Brand reportedly became the target of abusive chants from inmates at Wandsworth Prison following his final conviction on November 5, 2026. According to the Daily Mail, a source shared:
"They have to get their amusement somewhere, so they've made Brand the object, with hundreds of prisoners shouting the chant."
The source revealed that weekends at Wandsworth Prison were extremely dull because severe staff shortages often left inmates with very limited time outside their cells. There was no outdoor exercise in the prison yard, and evening meals were served at around 4:30 p.m., after which prisoners remained locked in their cells until 8 a.m. the following morning.
The source explained that the inmates had then found a way to stay entertained by mocking Russell. The source further claimed that Russell came out of his cell only to collect meals before returning immediately and added that he has been moving around quietly and keeping a very low profile.

Russell Brand prison story: The comedian received mocking chants from the prison's inmates

After Russell Brand's final conviction at the court, he was sent to Wandsworth Prison. The Daily Mail revealed that soon after entering the prison, the inmates started shouting at him with repeated chants:
"There's a Brand new n***e on the wing! A Brand new n***e. Brand, you c***, you ain't so f***ing lairy now."
Page Six revealed an official watchdog report where it mentioned that inmates were housed in a prison struggling with severe overcrowding, persistent vermin infestations, and ongoing violence. Consequently, this created a difficult situation for the prisoners, who could not live under safe conditions.
The Howard League for Penal Reform reported that the prison was holding 1,475 inmates despite having certified accommodation for only 894 prisoners. It meant that the prison was operating at 163% of its intended capacity.
The Daily Mail's source said there was no opportunity for prisoners to exercise outdoors in the yard, and after dinner was served at around 4:30 p.m., inmates were locked back in their cells until 8 a.m. the next morning. The source said,
"There is no outside exercise in the yard. Dinner or tea is served to prisoners at 4.30pm and then prisoners are back in their cells until 8am the next morning."
The source clarified that the prisoners had then found a way to entertain themselves by making fun of Russell Brand.
After spending his first night on the prison's induction wing, Russell was transferred to the vulnerable persons' wing. The move placed him inside a prison known for poor conditions and ongoing vermin problems.
The report highlighted that single-occupancy cells were regularly shared by two inmates, and some prisoners were left without a complete change of clothes for a long two to three weeks. The report also stated that the prison's showers were damp, unhygienic, and too few in number, while poor ventilation created conditions that allowed mold to grow easily.
