The Recording Academy, which oversees the Grammy Awards every February, have introduced five new categories for the 2027 edition, including Best Asian Pop Music Performance.South Korean boy band BTS, aka the Bangtan Boys, have rejected the category and have decided to not submit their music for the upcoming edition. All seven members took to their respective Instagram handles and posted the same message on their Stories:“We have decided not to enter the Grammys this year. I hope music itself can be heard and loved for what it is rather than being distinguished by region or language. Thank you to the army and everyone for always being with me.”In the wake of BTS’ rejection of the Grammys, netizens are having diverse reactions. Grammy Award is not for them,” another user joked.The Recording Academy has yet to address BTS’ rejection.Exploring the new categories of the GrammysRolling Stone obtained details about the five new categories of the Grammys, including Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Latin Song, and Best Traditional Folk Album.The first category “recognizes artistic excellence in Asian pop music performances originating from or widely recognized within Asian markets with meaningful use of one or more Asian languages.” It includes K-pop, C-pop, and J-pop, among others.The second category is reserved for performing artists and recognizes excellence in“singles and tracks that consist of a type and style of song and/or performance that cannot properly be intermingled with present forms of pop music.”As for the Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, it:“recognizes excellence in contemporary R&B performances for works by established duos or groups, as well as collaborative works between solo artists, duos, and groups.”The previous Best R&B Performance category has also been renamed as Best R&B Solo Performance.Best Traditional Folk Album “recognizes excellence in albums of traditional folk recordings” and will be presented to “artist(s), producer(s), engineer(s)/mixer(s), and songwriter(s) of new songs.” Meanwhile, Best Folk Album has been rebranded into Best Contemporary Folk Album.Best Latin Song will go to songwriters of “newly-written Latin songs predominantly (at least 51 percent) in Spanish.”The Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr released a press statement about the new categories:“2027 is going to be an amazing year for the Grammy Awards, and one that reflects the extraordinary growth we’re seeing across music. All members have voting membership status with the Recording Academy since 2019.The 69th annual Grammy Awards will take place at Crypto.com Arena in California on February 7, 2027.
