Donald Trump reportedly thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin because Putin had agreed to release diesel supplies in the global market. According to the Associated Press, Trump believed that the United States would profit a lot from this because Americans would get massive amounts of diesel according to the nation's requirements. He said to the reporter,
"I think you heard about the oil deal with Russia. That is a big deal. That is massive amounts of oil coming into our country. And I want to thank President Putin, to be honest with you."
According to the BBC, Trump announced that Putin had agreed to send 300,000 tonnes of diesel right away to both the American and global markets. He added that another 500,000 tonnes had been scheduled for November and an additional one million tonnes to follow after that.
However, until April 7, the US Treasury was reported to pause sanctions on Russian diesel exports as part of the agreement, while other holdings such as assets in American banks remain frozen.

Donald Trump thanked the Russian president for the release of diesel supplies
Donald Trump expressed gratitude to Vladimir Putin on October 9, 2026, for an agreement to send Russian diesel to the United States. He said that the deal would deliver large volumes of oil before the midterm elections. The agreement was done after Trump signed a broad sanctions law against Russia last month.
The US president then turned against the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for brief midterm relief. The arrangement with Putin over Russia's oil might calm the markets, but Ukraine would bear the cost.
On his Truth Social account, he posted that he had finished a successful conversation with Putin where they agreed that Russia would immediately deliver more than 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to both the American and global markets. Trump said,
"I have just concluded a highly successful discussion with President Vladimir Putin of Russia, wherein it was agreed that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace."
He then added that additional fuel supplies were expected afterwards and hinted that more fuel would come.
Is Donald Trump really funding Putin to start another war with Ukraine through the diesel deal?

The Statesman revealed that Donald Trump's move to secure millions of tons of Russian diesel had created a new diplomatic clash with Ukraine. Zelenskyy warned that the deal could boost Moscow's ability to fund its war, even as Washington continues efforts to reach a peace settlement.
Zelenskyy also criticized Trump's announcement of a deal to bring Russian diesel into America and said that the move was a gift to Putin. The Ukrainian president described the deal as an investment in a war and mentioned that it should be stopped, not extended.
The dispute broke out while Ukrainian, American, and European negotiators were meeting in Miami to discuss ways to end the war. As a result, the Trump government's energy goals came into direct conflict with Kyiv's demand for sustained economic pressure on Russia.
