President Donald Trump has once again made it to the headlines for a bizarre claim ahead of the midterm elections. During a rally, Trump claimed to have won the Vietnam War in a week. He said,

"I would've won the Vietnam war in a week."

Trump further mocked US strategy during the Vietnam War, saying:

"They dropped whatever that red cr*p is and they kept dropping it in the forest. Agent Orange, they dropped it in the forest for years and years and years. Instead of going after Ho Chi Minh City and different places."

Trump emphasized that he would have won the Vietnam War in a week. He further claimed that he could finish Iran in no time, but he said that he wants to be nice and save all those lives. However, he also added:

"But at some point we are gonna have to give them a hammer."

Here's more about it.

During a rally in Iowa ahead of the midterm elections, President Donald Trump made a controversial assertion related to the Vietnam War. He claimed he could have secured victory in a week. He expressed his dissatisfaction with how the prior US administration handled the conflict in Vietnam. His comments sparked debate on social media. Critics have also argued over the factual inaccuracies in Trump's remarks. They pointed out that Ho Chi Minh City was then known as Saigon. This is not the first time Trump has made such claims regarding the Vietnam War.

According to People, on April 21, 2026, President Trump claimed he would have ended the Vietnam War quickly and won it. Stating that the Vietnam War took 19 years to complete, he claimed that there would have been a different outcome if he had been the President at that time. He boasted:

"I would have won Vietnam very quickly if I were the president."

The Vietnam War ran from November 1955 to April 1975. According to People, during that time, a draft-age Trump avoided the military draft five times. The military draft required all US males aged between 18 and 25 to register for military service. During the war, Trump avoided the first four drafts due to his college education. After graduation in 1968, he was diagnosed with bone spurs, which enabled him to opt for a medical exemption.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, a total of 58,279 US service members lost their lives in Vietnam. Around 300,000 were wounded, and 153,000 of them required hospital care. Trump told The New York Times in 2016 that the bone spurs were not a big problem; however, they were 'difficult from the long-term walking standpoint'.
