The trailer of In the Hand of Dante has been released by Netflix. Directed and co-written by Julian Schnabel, the film was released at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2025, and then picked up by Netflix. In the Hand of Dante will be released in theaters by Netflix on June 12, 2026, and on Netflix on June 24, 2026.

In the Hand of Dante is based on Nick Tosches' 2002 book of the same name. The film will follow the parallel lives of a 21st-century author, Nick Tosches (a fictionalized version of the author of the book the film is based on), and the 14th-century poet Dante Alighieri. Both Nick Tosches and Dante will be played by Oscar Isaac.

In the Hand of Dante reveals a deadly hunt for Dante’s lost manuscript

In the Hand of Dante trailer begins with someone asking Nick Tosches who Dante is, and Nick is visibly surprised at the question. In the 21st century, Nick is an author who is obsessed with Dante's The Divine Comedy, and in one scene we even see him say,

"I know this poem so well, I feel like I wrote it myself."

A mafia don has apparently found out where the original manuscript of The Divine Comedy is and wants to have it. Given his knowledge of Dante, a mafia don sends Nick to the Vatican along with an assassin, Louie (played by Gerard Butler), and a goon, Lefty (played by Louis Cancelmi), to verify that the manuscript is indeed the real one and to bring it back to him.

The In the Hand of Dante trailer also shows us Dante Alighieri in the 14th century, trying to find inspiration to write The Divine Comedy. What's interesting is that the scenes of the events of the 21st century are shown in black and white, and those of the 14th century are shown in color. While one would expect the opposite, this has been done to highlight how life was more full of unique art and color in the past, and has become more mundane and cutthroat in the 21st century.

As Nick goes on this quest to find the manuscript and confirm its originality, we see glimpses of the difficulties Dante had to go through to write the poem. Others are also aware of the manuscript's existence, and since such an artifact is going to sell for a lot, they will try to kill Nick to get their hands on the manuscript. We see Jason Momoa as Rosario, a man sent to kidnap Nick, which he does.

In the Hand of Dante also shows us Al Pacino as Nick's uncle Carmine. We also see Nick come across a woman named Giulietta at a house that feels familiar to him. Gadot also plays Dante's wife, Gemma Donati, in the film. Gerard Butler also plays two roles: Louie in the 21st century and Pope Bonifacio in the 14th century. Similarly, Louis Cancelmi plays both the goon Lefty and Guido da Polenta.

The trailer ends with multiple characters with guns shooting at people we're yet to know, and Nick is one such character who is most likely going to commit murder on this dangerous journey to find a priceless manuscript.

In the Hand of Dante also stars John Malkovich as Joe Black, Martin Scorsese as Alighieri's mentor, Isaiah, Sabrina Impacciatore as Dr. Susanna Pulice, Franco Nero as Don Lecco, Benjamin Clementine as Mephistopheles, Lorenzo Zurzolo as Don Lecco, and Guido Caprino as Guido Cavalcanti, among others.

The film is produced by Jon Kilik, Francesco Melzi d'Eril, Olmo Schnabel, Gabriele Bebe Moratti, Vito Schnabel, and Julian Schnabel. The production companies behind the film are DreamCrew Entertainment, MeMo Films, Twin Pictures, and ArtOfficial Productions.

In the Hand of Dante will be released in theaters on June 12, 2026, and on Netflix on June 24, 2026.
