Netflix's upcoming movie, The Mosquito Bowl, revolves around the 1944 Marine football game. Before heading into one of the toughest battles of World War II, sixty-five U.S. Marines came together for a football game on Christmas Eve in 1944. Many of them had played football in college, and the match between the 4th and 29th Marine Regiments took place on Guadalcanal. The game later became known as The Mosquito Bowl.
However, many of the men were sent to fight in the Battle of Okinawa just months later, and some never made it home. In 2022, Buzz Bissinger published a non-fiction book of the same name. Netflix's upcoming movie, The Mosquito Bowl, is inspired by the same, according to Tudum, and stars Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis.
More on the story below.
How did Buzz Bissinger bring the true story of The Mosquito Bowl to life?

According to Netflix, their upcoming movie, The Mosquito Bowl, revolves around four college football stars, Bob Bauman, Dave Schreiner, John McLaughry, and Tony Butkovich. Their lives changed after the U.S. entered World War II in 1941, as they left their football dreams behind to join the Marines and fight in the Pacific. But during the war, they got a chance to play football again on the island of Guadalcanal. This real game became known as the Mosquito Bowl and later inspired Buzz Bissinger's nonfiction book. It was played by sixty-five U.S. Marines on Christmas Eve in 1944 in Guadalcanal. Later, many of them were sent to fight in the Battle of Okinawa.
While working on another project, Buzz Bissinger came across a story he had never heard before: a football game played by Marines during World War II. The more he learned about it, the more he wanted to know. As reported by Tudum, he said:
"First of all, the idea of a football game on the island of Guadalcanal during the Pacific theater blew me away."
He also found a link to his own family, as his father had served in one of the regiments that took part in the match. His father rarely spoke about his time in the war, but this connection stayed with Bissinger as he worked on the book. He soon learned that the game had brought together some very talented players, many of whom had played college football before joining the Marines.
Bissinger had to go through old military records and family papers to learn about the players, as most of them were no longer alive to share their own stories with him and the world. While some families had saved letters and photos, finding details about Butkovich proved harder, and Bissinger had to work with the few records he could find.
Buzz Bissinger's nonfiction book revisits the lives of many of the men who took part in it, through research and interviews with the players' families to learn more about them and their final days. He chose a few players to focus on and used their real stories to bring the book together.
Overall, the football game really happened, and many of the men who played in it later died during the Battle of Okinawa. Buzz Bissinger used research to tell their stories in his book, and Peter Berg is now bringing those stories to the screen. While the game and the men were real, the book and the film tell their stories in their own ways.
Berg and Bissinger are cousins who have worked together before, and this time, they joined hands for The Mosquito Bowl. Speaking about his time at the Marine base, Berg told Tudum he spent his days with the recruits, learning about their lives and the strong bond they shared. He would then return to his desk, read Bissinger's book, and work on the movie script. He added:
"I believe they call it ‘esprit de corps.’ It’s a spirit that is present in every person that you encounter on this base. It’s a clear-eyed sense of purpose that’s very, very inspiring."
The Mosquito Bowl is scheduled to release on November 25 on Netflix.
