NBA star Tristan Thompson has praised Donald Trump’s immigration policies in an upcoming episode of The Katie Miller Podcast. In a now-viral video from the preview of the show, Tristan, 35, was heard saying:

“What President Trump is doing, first of all, I love what he’s done so far for our country. I think he’s helped our country a lot.”

Tristan Thompson, who was born and raised in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, is a legal immigrant of the United States who became a citizen in 2020.

In the podcast, he shared that his personal experience and family ties to immigration further solidified his support for the POTUS.

“I’m a firm believer because I have family members and people that are immigrants. I believe for those that do things the right way and get the papers, they should be taken care of first and foremost. I think that’s the right way of going about it,” he added.

Thompson also told host Katie Miller that the process of becoming a U.S. citizen was quick (due to the COVID-19 lockdown) and that his NBA status had nothing to do with it. However, he expressed his empathy for those in the “in-between state” of getting documented and shared it required a more “nuanced” approach by all parties involved.

“I think it should be case by case on the right people. I understand where he's coming from, but for me, it varies depending on who the person is,” Thompson opined.

Here’s everything to know about Tristan Thompson’s citizenships

Tristan Thompson is now a dual citizen of Canada and the USA. He became a naturalised citizen of the latter during Trump’s first term as President and before joining the Boston Celtics.

For those who don’t recall, the video of Thompson taking the Oath of Allegiance in November 2020 circulated online, uploaded by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. He was heard saying in the clip:

“I came to the U.S. on a student visa and have always had big dreams. I’m now truly living the American dream.”

As a teenager, Tristan Thompson moved to Newark, New Jersey, to attend Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School. Later, he graduated high school from Findley Prep in Henderson, Nevada, before joining the University of Texas on a basketball scholarship, paving his way for a successful NBA center.

During the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft, he was picked fourth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Since then, he has played for other teams like the Celtics, Pacers, Kings, Lakers, and Bulls, but returned to the Cavaliers in 2023.

Before becoming a U.S. citizen, Tristan Thompson also got a key to his hometown of Brampton in August 2016, when he visited after winning that year’s NBA Championship for the Cavaliers. City councillor Gurpreet Dhillon along with other presented him with the key in the presence of Thompson’s mother.

Dhillon told the press that Tristan Thompson embodied what it means to be a “Bramptonian,” adding he was a “role model” for the youth in not only his hometown but across the country and the continent.

At the time, Tristan also told CBC that he aims to inspire students at his former high school, St. Marguerite D'Youville Secondary School, to follow their dreams.

"I want to motivate kids, even if it's just one kid, one child to strive for greatness, then I've done my job," Thompson stated.

Tristan Thompson carried with him the prestigious Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy and further mentioned:

“To be able to bring a championship here and show everyone here, it's a big honor… I just remember going to D'Youville and having the dream just to do something. Who would have thought, coming here to the soccer centre and playing outside, playing street ball, I would have an NBA championship, it's a blessing, it's a true blessing.”

Thompson is currently a free agent. His podcast with Miller will drop later this week.
