While most Avengers who survived the events of Avengers: Endgame have been confirmed to be returning for Avengers: Doomsday, Hawkeye's return hasn't been confirmed. Played by Jeremy Renner, the Avenger hasn't been spotted in any of the trailers or posters so far.

Jeremy Renner has now insisted that he isn't going to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and joked that the Avengers will lose because they won't have him on their team.

Jeremy Renner insists he isn't in Avengers: Doomsday, but fans aren't convinced

As @DiscussingFilm reported on X, Jeremy Renner has said that he isn't going to appear in Avengers: Doomsday because Marvel didn't call him. Moreover, he also made a joke that the Avengers will lose in their fight against Doctor Doom because Marvel did not cast him as Hawkeye/Clint Barton in the film. Renner said:

“I’m not in it, so the Avengers will probably lose, just so you know… [Marvel] didn’t call me, so it’s their fault. They’re going to lose.”

Fans, however, aren't convinced. While the actor has already stated he isn't appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, fans still think he's bluffing just to keep his appearance a secret. Often important cast members of films with huge fanbases pretend they aren't part of the film, only to appear in it as a surprise. Marvel fans thus think Renner is doing the same.

One fan (@Sam_coll001) commented under DiscussingFilm's post:

"This is the same energy as every Marvel actor saying they’re not in a movie right before the surprise cameo."

The fan isn't wrong. There have been multiple instances of Marvel actors saying they aren't in an upcoming film but then appearing in it to surprise the fans. Moreover, since Renner talked about the whole thing in such a humorous way, even joking that the Avengers would lose without Hawkeye, most fans couldn't take him seriously.

Another fan (@NathenJayden) pointed out the example of a Marvel actor saying he won't appear in a film but then having a surprise appearance. He commented:

"The same “I’m not in it” that Andrew Garfield said before no way home? Got it 👍🏾 see you soon Hawkeye."

This fan is thus convinced we'll see Hawkeye in Avengers: Doomsday because his words sound a lot like Andrew Garfield's did ahead of Spider-Man: No Way Home's premiere. Another fan (@DylanWa77597613) commented about the joke Renner made that the Avengers would lose without his character Hawkeye by their side. He said:

"I love that he takes part in the running joke."

There's a running joke among MCU fans that the Avengers only lose against a villain when Hawkeye isn't on their team. For instance, Clint wasn't in Avengers: Infinity War, in which the Avengers famously lost to Thanos. When Hawkeye returned in Avengers: Endgame, they won.

Since Jeremy Renner has jokingly said that the Avengers will lose because Hawkeye isn't in it, it looks like he's taking a part in the running joke. But if we entertain the joke as a legit pattern followed by Marvel, Hawkeye might appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, which is a follow-up to Avengers: Doomsday.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
