After getting immense positive reviews at the Venice Film Festival for his performance in Wild Horse Nine, John Malkovich also has the possibility of getting an Oscar nomination.
In the movie, he takes on the role of Chris, a CIA agent navigating a mission where their trust is tested. The storyline is set in 1973. At the London Film Festival, Malkovich opens up and gives a reality check on Oscar campaigning.
John Malkovich’s reality check and the changing times
While speaking at the London Film Festival, John Malkovich notes that there has been a significant change in the world of entertainment, especially the situation regarding the awards, which he remembers “differently”. While reminiscing about the past, Malkovich adds that previously, the intrigue surrounding awards maintained an “undeserved” and “very, very high position in the culture,” according to him.
Giving examples of movies, he also points out that there were not many impactful movies at that period of time, which raised the intrigue and anticipation surrounding movies. However, in the present scenario, it is difficult to make people go to the theaters to watch a movie.

He thinks that the “only way to get people to go to the theaters” is through the awards, which go on for “months and months and months”. Malkovich also opens up about his first experience at the Oscars when he received the nomination for Places in the Heart, where he took on the role of Mr. Will. His experience at the award ceremony was significant, as he notes that he was eager to find a “side door” to avoid being in front of “a lot of people”.
However, his manager, Phyllis Carlyle, was not happy with John Malkovich’s reaction, as she answered that “there’s no side door” because “it’s the Oscars”. Malkovich further adds that it was his “native personality in the face of that kind of onslaught”. It cannot be denied that through the years the entertainment industry has navigated a significant change. Malkovich does not want to think that “things aren’t what they used to be”.
He wants to “change” with the changes that are happening around him, as the choice is either to “change with them or die”. While speaking about his previous Oscar nominations, Malkovich also gets candid about how these two projects were able to make “their money” and were “already successful”. Besides Places in the Heart and Wild Horse Nine, Malkovich has done several projects through the years depicting his acting prowess and ability to take on layered characters.

Some of John Malkovich’s other notable projects that can also be added to your watchlist are In the Line of Fire, The Yellow Tie, Ten Year Old Tom, Space Force, The New Pope, etc. That period of time was a “different world," which is not the same now, as people hardly go to the theater. Wild Horse Nine has several other significant cast members alongside him. Some of the other notable cast members of Wild Horse Nine are Sam Rockwell, Luciano Reinoso, Laura Vila, Mireya Sotoconil, etc.
