John Wick finally has a promising update on the franchise's next movie

The John Wick franchise has finally dropped an update on its next movie. Ever since Ballerina hit the theatres in 2025, fans have been eager to find out what lies ahead for the neo-noir action thriller film series. While 2026 has been relatively quiet with no new releases, the new update suggests the wait will be over soon.

Lionsgate has revealed that both Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski have been working on the fifth installment of the main film series, though they are still figuring out how to proceed with the story. Stahelski is currently busy with the Highlander reboot starring Henry Cavill, but once the project wraps up, it is expected that the duo will focus on John Wick: Chapter 5. As things stand, it is difficult to predict when the next chapter will arrive at the theatres.

Turns out, fans do not have to wait too long for the next movie of the John Wick franchise. A brand-new John Wick spin-off movie is already in development. The movie is called Caine and will be based on martial arts master Donnie Yen's character. The character was introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4. Yen will also direct and produce the movie. New John Wick spin-off movie update: Caine wraps up filming

Filming for the upcoming John Wick movie, Caine, reportedly started in early 2026. Previously, Lionsgate confirmed at CinemaCon in April 2025 that the project had been greenlit.

Recently, Donnie Yen took to Instagram to share the latest update. He confirmed that the filming for Caine wrapped up in July 2026. He captioned the picture:

"That's a wrap"

The script is co-written by Robert Askins and Mattson Tomlin from a story which was authored by Yen and Stahelski. According to Deadline, Michael McGrale has also co-authored the screenplay with Tomlin. The plot follows the lead character Caine, who navigates his life after release from High Table, the assassin organisation controlled by elite crime families. The movie is set to follow the events after Chapter 4. According to IMDb, the summary reads:

"Follows Caine, a blind assassin freed from his obligations to The High Table, a council that runs a global empire controlled by elite crime families, who finds himself pulled back into the world he tried to leave behind."

Apart from Yen, the cast features Rina Sawayama, who reprises her role as Shimazu Akira, who, in Chapter 4, worked in the Hitman hotel. She blamed Caine for her father's death. Other stars who are set to appear in the film include Dacre Montgomery, Mason Thames, Bill Nighy, among others.

Caine's potential release date and production details

Caine does not have an official release date yet. However, the upcoming spin-off film is expected to arrive sometime in 2027. It would be quite surprising if the movie is pushed back to 2028 since the filming wrapped up in July 2026. With no other John Wick projects lined up for 2027, the film would have a clear window to make its theatrical debut by the next year.

Yen and Courtney Brook serve as the executive producers. Meanwhile, the production is handled by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee from Thunder Road, Stahelski's 87Eleven Entertainment Productions, Keanu Reeves, and John Saunders. The movie will be distributed by Lionsgate Films.
