Avengers: Doomsday is set to have a major presence at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) this year. The MCU epic kicked off its marketing campaign this week as the first trailer dropped online along with the tickets going live on Monday. Feige revealed that Marvel realized that the Doomsday team wasn't going to finish the movie for a May 2026 release, which is why it was delayed to December this year.Then, the Marvel boss went on to address how the studio decided to cast Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Revealing that the studio was mulling over options for Doom, Feige said that he chose RDJ after watching Oppenheimer:"When we were casting for Doctor Doom, we said: we need to find the greatest actor in the world. Doctor Doom is one of the most interesting characters. He's intelligent, has an extremely high IQ; he can be a villain, but he also sees himself as a hero. We went to see Oppenheimer—for which he won an Oscar—and we finally realized."Then, the Marvel executive went on to compare this siutation with that of Chris Evans' casting back in 2011:"Just like when we were casting Captain America, we didn't want to exclude Chris Evans just because he'd played other Marvel characters, and in this situation, we thought: how great, bold, and risky it would be to bring back our most famous hero to play our most famous villain. Thank goodness, he agreed."As of now we don't know if the movie will address Doctor Doom looking like Earth-616 Tony Stark. At one point, the God of Thunder, Thor, brings down his deadly God-killing axe, Stormbreaker, on Doom, only for the Latverian dictator to block it with his fingers. But much like his comic counterpart, fan theories suggest that Doom in Avengers: Doomsday will have a tragic backstory. The official poster only cemented this belief.In that poster, we see Doom looking at a tapestry of a woman and a child, surrounded by a planet (probably Earth) and mythological figures. Some believe that the woman and the child in the tapestry are Doctor Doom's wife and child, while others suggest that the woman and the child in the picture are his mother Cynthia and Victor himself.In the comics, one of Doom's aims is to free his mother's soul from hell after Cynthia Von Doom made a deal with Mephisto, the devil of the Marvel Universe. However, Cynthia regretted the deal and tried to break it, only for Mephisto to claim her soul. This event is why Doom pushed himself to learn magic. Doom's skill for combining magic and science is something the movies ignored, until Avengers: Doomsday.
