Her attorney has argued that she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and extreme mental illness.Continue reading for more details.What has happened in the Lindsay Clancy case till now?Lindsay Clancy, a former delivery nurse, is on trial for the 2023 deaths of her three children, Cora (5), Dawson (3), and Callan (8 month old).According to a report in the People magazine, after welcoming her youngest child in 2022, the 36 year old began to develop symptoms of postpartum psychosis, per a complaint filed by her husband against medical providers.The defense in Lindsay Clancy's case has argued that she overmedicated and was suffering from postpartum psychosis. However, the prosecutors claimed that Clancy carefully planned the killings and was aware of the opportunity to carry them out during her husband's absence.She allegedly murdered her children on January 24, 2023 at their home in Duxbury, Massachusetts. After reportedly carrying out the killings, Clancy tried to take her own life by jumping from a window from the second floor but survived. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston for more intensive care.She later moved to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and was later transferred to Tewksbury State Hospital, where she has continues to receive treatment while attending her trial.Her mother testified in the court that her daughter:"always wanted to be a mother, have many children, and I felt it was the best thing that ever happened to her. She would mention that this wasn’t her mind. She would say to me, ‘This isn’t me, I’ve never been like this before.’ And I would agree, because she wasn’t.”Lindsay Clancy worked as a labor and a delivery nurse. Her friend, Samantha told The New York Post:“Being a nurse and a mother was her life plan since high school and that always made perfect sense to me because taking care of people just came naturally to her."Clancy married her husband, Patrick, a commercial airline pilot in December 2016 after meeting him in Boston in 2013. The couple settled in Duxbury together and had three children together. In the months leading up to the killings, Lindsay Clancy has been seeing psychiatric nurse practitioner Rebecca Jollotta and psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Tufts. Tufts testified that he started treating Clancy in September 2022 for depression and insomnia. He further said that she “was very clearly not psychotic.” Jollotta revealed that Clancy had reported experiencing suicidal thoughts but did not have a plan to act on them.Reports indicated that Lindsay Clancy has admitted to killing her children but has not pleaded guilty. She has consistently maintained that she was suffering from postpartum illness at the time of the killings.
