M3GAN spinoff ‘Soulm8te’ trailer teases rogue AI android, reveals digital release date

The first trailer of M3GAN's spin-off film, Soulm8te, is finally out now. This sci-fi erotic horror thriller is directed by Kate Dolan. Along with Dolan, Rafael Jordan serves as the co-writer. It is the third project of the M3GAN franchise. The cast includes Lily Sullivan, Claudia Daumit, and David Rysdal, among others.

Soulm8te follows a grieving engineer who is tasked to test a tech giant's new artificial intelligence Android. However, when he tries to program her to be a soulmate with emotions/sentiments, she starts to develop needs of her own, and that turns into complete chaos.

M3GAN, the original sci-fi horror film released in 2023, became a major hit. It garnered $181 worldwide at the box office. Its sequel, M3GAN 2.0, barely managed to cross $39 million worldwide.

Soulm8te trailer opens with a man called David who receives a delivery of a life-sized robot. The delivery man further instructs him,

"In the box you got three outfits, sundress, an apron, night club and school girl."

David is shocked to hear that there's an outfit for a schoolgirl, and it creeps him out a little. The trailer then introduces the viewers to the robot/artificial intelligence android, who seems to be proficient at household chores. Her name is Sara. However, David isn't quite satisfied with the purchase, as he complains that Sara lacks emotions. Sara bluntly tells David,

"I'm sorry David. I cannot perform the action for you."

David wants a genuine human experience, and he programs Sara accordingly. The changes soon start showing, but it turns dangerous as Sara gets obsessed with him. Sara creepily stares at him at night and repeatedly asks him whether he loves her or not.

The obsession turns dangerous when Sara crosses all limits and harms anyone who tries to get in between them. At one point in the trailer, David instructs Sara to turn on the power save mode, but instead she turns violent. When David brings a woman home, Sara gets jealous and tries to kill the woman after she pleads with her that she isn't an enemy.

Soulm8te was removed from Universal's Theatrical calendar last year, and now it's heading for a digital release. It will be available on VOD platforms from August 1, 2026, onwards through Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The movie is produced by James Wan and Jason Blum under the Blumhouse-Atomic Monster production banners. Soulm8te was shot in 2024, but it was held after M3GAN 2.0's underperformance.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kate Dolan revealed that the film isn't just an erotic thriller; it's also within the M3GAN franchise, and that's what makes it different.

However, she clarified that it will have,

"Slightly different bones to it. So it can wink to M3GAN and it’s connected, but it’s also a film in its own and not trying to copy what M3GAN did.”

Dolan further confirmed that even though there will be M3GAN Easter Eggs throughout, she intended to create a standalone movie that viewers who haven't watched the previous films can also enjoy.
