Following Netflix's The Crash, the Mackenzie Shirilla case gained notable attention worldwide. The actual incident dates back to July 2022, when a car crash resulted in the deaths of her boyfriend, Dominic Russo and their friend, Davion Flanagan.

The car belonged to then 17-year-old ShIrilla, who drove at a very high speed. She did not use the brakes and the vehicle crashed into a building. The case then became quite unusual because prosecutors did not treat it as a normal traffic accident.

Instead, they argued that Shirilla intentionally drove the car into the building as she wanted to kill the boys and herself. Because of that theory, she was charged with murder rather than facing only traffic-related offenses.

While Mackenzie ShIrilla still claims that she did not crash the car intentionally, she was given prison sentences of 15 years to life, making her eligible for parole in 2037. And now, a recent report has suggested that the Ohio Supreme Court has decided not to hear Mackenzie Shirilla's request for a new trial.

More details below.

If you have watched The Crash on Netflix, then you must be well-aware of the Mackenzie Shirilla case from 2022. It's one of the shocking incidents, as it wasn't treated as a normal case but a planned killing.

As explained before, the teenager was driving with her boyfriend and best friend to school. While driving, she turned onto Progress Drive, accelerated rapidly to about 100 mph, and slammed into a brick commercial building (Plidco Building) without braking or swerving.

This resulted in the immediate deaths of the two boys, while Shirilla sustained serious injuries and was airlifted. When she recovered, a case was filed against her and the jury found her guilty.

Now, reports suggest that Shirilla recently requested another trial but that effort has hit another obstacle after the Ohio Supreme Court declined to take up her latest appeal. This means that the charges put on her remain the same.

And this isn't the first time. The May 2025 ruling by Cuyahoga County Judge Nancy Margaret Russo had already dismissed her post-conviction petition, and that decision was later upheld by Ohio's Eighth District Court of Appeals.

Mackenzie Shirilla's legal team then sought review from the state's highest court, hoping the justices would examine the lower courts' conclusions. However, the Ohio Supreme Court chose not to accept jurisdiction over the appeal.

Mackenzie Shirilla has always denied the claim that she killed Dominic and Davion. She explained that she does not have any memory about the morning of the car crash, but she does know that she's not a killer. She said:

"I’m unsure, because I have no recollection of that morning, but I know nothing about it being intentional, because that’s not in my character."

She also said that the conviction has taken an emotional toll on her:

"I try to wake up and be the best person I can be every day."

As of now, Shirilla continues to serve her punishment.
