Alejandro González Iñárritu's Tom Cruise movie, Digger, is playing on the big screens around the world. The latest Tom Cruise project has surprisingly gotten a divisive reaction from the critics. We learn very early in the movie that Cruise's "Digger Rockwell" is a character. Actor Curtis Markson (Tom Cruise) portrays the oil tycoon in a stage play called Fossil Fools.

In the film's continuity, Rockwell's actions caused a climate disaster some time ago. Thus, the play Curtis is a part of satirizes the tycoon.

This shocking twist is one of the most discussed and divisive elements of the movie. But the marketing team of the movie is posting the divisive reaction to promote the movie. The team posted a new reel on its social media account with critics' quotes ranging between positive and negative. One user who praised the marketing team said this in the comments section of the post:

"Even the marketing is brilliant - promote the divided ratings and entice the audience to go see for themselves."

Reaction to Tom Cruise's Digger explained: What are fans saying?

While critical reactions to the new Tom Cruise movie have been negative, fan reactions have been far more positive. It is possible that the affection for the star could play a role in the warmer reaction. One fan said that they were booking tickets for IMAX:

Another fan commended Iñárritu for the satirical nature of Digger, saying:

"So half the unsettling chemistry in these scenes is two deliberately artificial-looking characters staring back at each other.😂 Iñárritu really committed to making everything feel slightly wrong."

An X user, @otheranthonyOA said:

"My word 😭 This marketing strategy will be spoken of in schools."

Conversely, @dbdperk, in their negative review, said:

"Absolutely hated this movie. 2 hours of my life gone. If Tom Cruise is happy with this p*s, so be it. What a waste."

Based on the majority of reactions, it seems people are excited to watch the movie just for Tom Cruise. Some might even like this satire about satires.

What happens in the ending of the new Tom Cruise movie?

It seems that most of the movie is set inside the theater in which the play is taking place. As Curtis plays the role of the oil tycoon throughout the play, he is worried about his daughter, who was on a flight from Jamaica, which is lost.

In the third act, the play heads towards Digger's death and the subsequent climate disaster. Curtis gets all the cheers for his performance in the scene in which the tycoon dies. Curtis's wife informs him that their daughter is safe when she comes to the theater to congratulate him. But the happiness is short-lived.

That's because the theater management announces to the attendees about a "Level 4" weather condition in the outside world. Soon, we see all the attendees putting on breathing masks before leaving the theater altogether. Soon the camera reveals that the world has been destroyed because of the actions of the oil tycoon. The city is flooded, and it is patrolled by human soldiers and robots.

The ending of the movie feels relevant as climate change feels inevitable. Combined with the last shot of robots, the climax seems to hint at the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the world today.

While some viewers may appreciate the movie for being relevant, others may dislike it for hiding the twist from the marketing materials.

"The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything."

Digger is currently playing in theaters in both standard and IMAX formats.
