Masters of the Universe set to take over IMAX from The Mandalorian and Grogu

The Mandalorian and Grogu might not stay long on IMAX screens, as IMAX is making space for Masters of the Universe. This last-minute update has attracted a lot of attention worldwide from the fans as it shortens the premium screen run of the new Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which was released on May 22, 2026.

Directed by Travis Knight, Masters of the Universe stars Nicholas Galitzine and Camila Mendes in the lead roles. Galitzine is famous for Purple Hearts and The Idea of You, and Camila Mendes is loved for her role in Upgraded and Palm Springs. The movie is scheduled to release later this week.

The Mandalorian and Grogu saw a major 72% drop in ticket sales during their second weekend by only making around $25 million. As per the recent update by IMAX, Masters of the Universe will start screening in its theaters from June 5.

The announcement was made on X, where IMAX confirmed that tickets for Masters of the Universe are now on sale.

IMAX brings Masters of the Universe to theaters on June 5

Masters of the Universe will be available to watch in theaters starting June 5, the same day as its release.

This new move from IMAX, which is usually known for announcing films in advance, has come as a surprise for fans, as the announcement was made just a week before the movie's release date, something that fans were not expecting. In contrast, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which cost around $165 million to make, were released on May 22 and had their IMAX ticket announcement on April 17, more than a month earlier.

Additionally, Masters of the Universe was not even on IMAX's official 2026 list, which included movies like Supergirl, Disclosure Day, and Toy Story 5.

While IMAX had not originally planned to screen the film, as its slots were already occupied by The Mandalorian and Grogu, the latter's weaker second-weekend performance, along with better results from films like Obsession, which is growing in popularity worldwide, might have influenced the change in schedule.

Additionally, Travis Knight's movie has received positive reactions from the audience who attended the premiere screening in the TCL Chinese Theater, Los Angeles, held on May 18. The attendees liked how Travis Knight respected the original He-Man world with lots of Easter eggs, and many appreciated Nicholas Galitzine's acting as He-Man. The movie's 80s style, humor, and nostalgic feel were also widely praised by the viewers.

However, they have not released any official statement regarding the sudden addition of the movie as of now, leaving it to speculation.

Alongside Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man and Camila Mendes as Teela, the movie casts Idris Elba as Duncan, Jared Leto as Skeletor, and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto.

The synopsis of the movie reads:

"After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto).
