Ellen DeGeneres Show executive producer Matthew Wright died on October 30 while working remotely in Los Angeles, California. He was 52. The death was announced in a GoFundMe campaign titled:

“Support the Wright Family & Justin During an Impossible Time.”

The GoFundMe was launched by the Leman Family on behalf of Matthew’s sister Mandy Wright. The description called it an “unfathomable tragedy” but did not disclose the cause of death.

The fundraiser exceeded the goal of $50,000 and raised $73,935 from 384 donations at the time of writing.

More about Matthew Wright’s death

According to the GoFundMe, Matthew Wright is survived by his husband Justin, his sister Mandy, his father, and his niece Sami.

“His husband, father, sister and niece are in New York, desperate to be reunited for a proper goodbye. We’re asking for all of his friends, who Matt loved so fully, to help the family at this time… And the unexpected costs of getting Matt home, a funeral and a memorial are impossible for the family to bear,” the fundraiser read.

It added that both Matthew and Justin were “laid off this summer” and the financial aid would help cover the funeral in New York, the memorial in Los Angeles, and set up a trust for Wright’s “pride and joy,” his niece Sami.

“If Matt has ever made you laugh, said an encouraging word right when you needed it, or ordered one too many appetizers for the enjoyment of the whole table, now is the time to repay the favor. Please donate what you can and share this with anyone who’s been in the orbit of Matt’s huge heart. And when you’re at dinner and see a sunset, know that Matt is looking down, loving you, but wildly disappointed in what you ordered,” the GoFundMe read.

On Monday, Ellen DeGeneres shared a tearful video tribute for Matthew Wright via Instagram with a heartbreak emoji in the caption.

“He was an amazing guy. He was funny. God, he made me laugh. He would surprise me with things that he did all the time. He was smart. He was kind. He was part of our show… Everyone loved him. I loved him. And it’s just shocking,” Ellen stated.

The former talk show host claimed she was working on a “project together” with Matthew Wright that they were “supposed to start.”

“We are gonna miss him. He is and always will be the glue to our entire family of the Ellen DeGeneres Show… I think this is gonna be a really… I don’t know what I’m saying… To Justin and his family, I’m so sorry. We lost a good guy. He and Twitch were so close. So, now, he and Twitch are together, dancing and laughing,” Ellen added.

Stephen “Twitch” Boss was a dancer and choreographer who also worked on her show as a guest host and co-executive producer. Twitch died by an apparent suicide in December 2022, at the age of 40.

Ms DeGeneres also shared clips from her show featuring Matthew Wright. In one, she said Wright had “strong opinions about everything.” Meanwhile, Matthew said his biggest pet peeve was restaurants bringing him all the appetizers together and said it “annoys” him, as he wanted them to be “coursed out.” The segment was called “Strong Opinions with Matt.” In a third clip, Wright was heard saying he “hated” the new segment on him.

Several other clips showed Matthew Wright in comedic sketches performing various roles. Ellen DeGeneres’ emotional tribute ended with the note, “We love you, Matt.” According to TMZ, she donated $5,000 to Wright’s GoFundMe.

Andy Lassner, who also worked alongside Wright as an executive producer on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, paid tribute via Instagram on Sunday. He mentioned that Matthew Wright visited him recently on the set of The Jennifer Hudson Show.

“These photos were taken Thursday, while we were taping our Halloween show. Matt came by to visit. A few hours later, he was gone. We are all in shock. He was a brilliant producer and an even better human being,” Lassner wrote.

He added:

“My heart breaks for his husband, Justin, his family, and all of us who loved him. I was so lucky to work beside Matt for so many years and to call him my friend. We should have had so much more time with him.”

In May 2022, Matthew Wright marked his 16 years on the show with an Instagram post where he wrote:

“The last episode of ‘Ellen’ airs today and I’ve been dreading what to post. How do I even begin to sum up 16 years of my life? I’ve made so many best friends, had so many amazing experiences, met so many heroes of mine and even fell in love thanks to this show. I will forever be grateful to @theellenshow for taking a chance on me and changing my life! Here’s to an amazing run!”

Matthew Wright worked on The Ellen DeGeneres Show from 2006 to 2022.
