Mountaineer Nirmal Purja of 14 Peaks killed in deadly Pakistan avalanche

Nepali-British mountaineer Nirmal Purja, also known as Nims or Nimsdai has tragically died in a Pakistan avalanche while climbing Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range on July 30, 2026. He was 43 and leading an expedition organized by his guiding company, Elite Exped.

Little did anyone know that a tragedy would occur and claim Purja's life. According to reports, the avalanche struck between Camp 2 and Camp 3 on Broad Peak, which comes under one of the world's highest mountains. And not just Purja, but several others from different countries also died in this incident.

It was on July 30, 2026 when a Pakistan avalanche struck the western ridge of Broad Peak between Camp 2 and Camp 3. It then rose to 8,047 meters. Notably, Broad Peak is the world's 12th-highest mountain with the most unpredictable weather, avalanche-prone slopes, and challenging terrain along the Pakistan-China border.

Nirmal Purja was leading a multinational expedition organized by his company, Elite Exped. The team included experienced Nepali guides and climbers from countries including the United States, China, Oman, and Pakistan. They all were attempting to reach the summit under his leadership but ended up losing their lives.

As the avalanche occurred, connection with most of the climbers was lost. It led to an extensive search-and-rescue operation, including teams assisted by drones and limited helicopter support.

The search on the mountains was difficult due to poor weather, difficult terrain, and the region's remote location. Later, Elite Exped confirmed that Purja along with other climbers, had died in the disaster.

Just days before the expedition, Nirmal Purja had shared that Broad Peak was an unplanned addition to his journey after summiting Gasherbrum II. He was working toward climbing all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters for a second time without supplemental oxygen and spoke of seeking a safe passage while pursuing a purpose greater than personal achievement.

14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible is a 2021 documentary film on Netflix that tells the real story of Nirmal Purja. It is directed by Torquil Jones and focuses on one of the most extraordinary achievements in the history of high-altitude climbing.

The film is majorly about the mountaineer's mission, called Project Possible, which aimed to climb all 14 mountains in the world that rise above 8,000 meters. These peaks aren't just among the highest ones but also the most dangerous around the globe.

It has extreme weather, thin air, and difficult climbing conditions. Purja completed his mission by climbing all those 14 mountains, but what made it historic was doing so in just six months and six days during 2019.

As explained in Netflix's 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, it takes a long time, around a year, to climb those mountains, but Nirmal Purja did it in a very little time. The documentary also includes the people who supported him during the expedition, such as members of his climbing team, including experienced Sherpas like Mingma David Sherpa.
