Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, announced in June 2026 that it was splitting from its media entities. This move will take almost a year to be completed, but the shift has already begun. The split will remove Universal Pictures, NBC, Telemundo networks, Peacock streaming, Bravo, theme parks, and Sky, and others from Comcast.
One might think that such a huge move will make things difficult at NBCUniversal; but NBCUniversal Media Group's chairman, Matt Strauss, thinks it's a good thing and is positive about how much more flexibility the split will give the company.
Matt Strauss is looking forward to NBCUniversal's split from Comcast
NBCUniversal Media Group includes NBC, Telemundo, Bravo, NBC News, NBC Sports, local NBC television stations, theme parks, Peacock, Hayu, and film and television studios. The split from Comcast means a huge change in corporate structure, which will definitely shake things up.
In early 2026, Comcast had done something similar when it shifted many of NBCUniversal's assets into another company, Versant Media. These assets included CNBC, MS NOW, USA Network, E!, Syfy, Oxygen, Golf Channel, Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. One would think that another corporate overhaul so soon would lead to uncertainty and chaos.
However, as chairman of NBCUniversal Media Group, Matt Strauss revealed at a BofA Securities conference, he is positive about all the opportunities the split will bring. As Deadline reports, speaking about the split, Strauss said:
“There is genuine excitement”
He added:
“We feel really good about our trajectory and our growth, and I think the independence is going to allow us to move faster. It’s like a catalyst for us.”

He also added that this split will allow the company to be more
"flexible"
regarding its partnerships. Strauss went on to explain that he believes that the split will allow them to move faster when it comes to decisions instead of waiting for Comcast's approval. Moreover, following the split, as Strauss revealed, NBCUniversal is no longer trying to be a broadcasting company that also happens to be a player in the streaming market. As he said:
"We’re trying to build a digital-first new media company where we’re trying to get the maximum return for our investment across the portfolio.”
Moreover, we're also going to see Peacock get more focus in the future, and not just in the traditional sense. Besides the usual offerings of the platform, Strauss also talked about how the platform intends to introduce games, podcasts, and other forms of customized media.
To give an example, Strauss said that NBCUniversal has noticed how viewers who watch Love Island USA shift to social media to engage with content related to the show, be it viral clips, memes, or discussions. The company intends to create more experiences on Peacock that will allow viewers to engage with the show's content beyond the episodes. That will help the company benefit from the interest its show is generating instead of letting viewers move to other platforms.
These changes will take place in due time, as the company adjusts itself following the split. Stay tuned for more updates.
