Netflix drops the first trailer for Cannes sensation La Bola Negra starring Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close

After a successful Cannes journey in May, La Bola Negra’s official trailer is finally here. The storyline brings forth three separate timelines that will depict interconnected stories. Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo took the helm as the directors of this movie and have also won the award for Best Director at Cannes.

The movie is set to get a theatrical release on October 16 and will be available for streaming on Netflix, as the streaming giant won the bidding war for the distribution. Here are the details of the trailer for La Bola Negra starring the very talented Penélope Cruz.

A distinct factor that draws the viewers in from the beginning of the trailer is how the characters set the path of the storyline. The focus of La Bola Negra will be on three generations and how each generation explores their sexuality. The trailer also delivers the grim note through its breathtaking visuals, which resonates deeply with the viewers.

The struggles and difficulties that the three characters of the three generations will face because of their sexuality will be depicted in the movie. The three timelines include 1932, 1937, and 2017. It must also be pointed out that the lives of the three gay men will be intertwined. The storyline is also a tribute to Federico García Lorca, as the storyline takes inspiration from Lorca’s unfinished work and from La Piedra Oscura, which is a play written by Alberto Conjero.

The screenplay for the movie has been written by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi along with Alberto Conjero. An original film by Movistar Plus+, Penélope Cruz brings life to the character of Nené Romero in La Bola Negra. Besides Cruz, some of the other cast members of the movie are Lola Dueñas, Guitarricadelafuente, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Miguel Bernardeau, etc.

Carlos González takes on the role of Alberto while Milo Quifes brings life to Carlos in the movie. Besides taking on the role of Sebastián in the movie, Guitarricadelafuente also writes and performs La Nieve, which is one of the songs of the movie. La Nieve has also joined the race for the Oscar. The meaning of La Nieve is "The Snow," which is a significant element in delivering the emotional weight in the movie.

Guitarricadelafuente’s character Sebastián is a soldier who will take on the task of protecting Miguel Bernardeau’s Rafael Rodríguez Rapún. While the Spanish Civil War rages on, the two of them will form a distinct bond that will be a propelling factor in the movie. This role is also Guitarricadelafuente’s acting debut. Netflix reportedly struck a deal of $4 to 5 million to acquire La Bola Negra.

After the screening at Cannes, the movie received an overwhelming 20-minute ovation from the viewers, which is very close to the record of a 22-minute ovation for Pan’s Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro.

During the ovation, directors Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo shared,

“To everyone who thinks that we’re gonna step back in our LGBTQ rights, I have bad news”.

In a previous interview with Netflix, directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi noted that their goal was to tell a “story about freedom, legacy, and the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility”.
