Sen. Bernie Sanders slammed President Trump after he advised "price-conscious" people not to visit his Florida-based, private members-only club, Mar-a-Lago, to spend their promised check.

During a midterm rally in Texas on Tuesday, President Trump campaigned for Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton, who is running against Democratic nominee James Talarico. According to PEOPLE, during the speech Trump mentioned his promised $5,000 check, which he said every adult American would receive if Republicans regain control of both the House and Senate. Addressing the crowd, the president said recipients could spend the money anywhere in the US and even visit Mar-a-Lago. He then joked:

"You'll be my guest at Mar-a-Lago. The problem is that for $5,000, the most you'll be able to buy is a hamburger and maybe a small dessert. I'm not even sure you could buy that. No don't go there that's not a good place if you're price conscious."

Many Trump critics targeted him over the comment. Bernie Sanders, who often criticizes the president on affordability issues, also shared his reaction on Wednesday in an X post. The Vermont lawmaker claimed that under Trump, diesel prices rose 72%, gas prices hiked 53%, and beef costs shot up by 17%. He added:

"Trump’s message to working-class voters? If you can’t afford groceries, maybe you should try a $5,000 hamburger at Mar-a-Lago. This is how out of touch with reality this guy is."

Last month, when the POTUS announced the $5,000 check for every adult American and claimed that he had fulfilled his every promise, Bernie Sanders called it a "lie." In his X post, the senator called the POTUS a "pathological liar-in-chief" and listed a series of promises that Trump made before coming into office but allegedly failed to fulfill. Sanders wrote:

"And now, after all of those lies, Trump wants you to believe that he will give every American adult a $5,000 check - but only if the Republicans win the midterms. No. I don’t think so. The Trump Administration is not about helping working families. It’s about giving a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the 1% and throwing 15 million Americans off the health care they have."

Bernie Sanders calls Trump the "most dangerous" president in US history

In another Wednesday tweet, the independent senator called Trump an "authoritarian," stressing the importance of next week's elections. Bernie Sanders posted:

"Trump is the most dangerous president in our history. He's an authoritarian who does not believe in the rule of law. This election is not about Ds vs. Rs. It's about whether we maintain a rubber-stamp GOP Congress that aids and abets Trump — or finally hold him accountable."

Bernie Sanders has been actively stumping for Democratic candidates like Abdul El-Sayed, whom the Trump administration is targeting in full swing.
