Republican Senator Thom Tillis slammed President Trump over an executive order he signed to waive sanctions against Russia.According to the BBC, on Friday, the POTUS signed an executive order to exempt Russia from sanctions under the 'Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act,' just two days before they were due to come into force. Per ABC News, the president signed the legislation last month. It was named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham, who championed the bill. The law was aimed at targeting Russian financial institutions, oligarchs, and politicians. The legislation empowered the POTUS to impose duties of up to 100% on imports from the top five buyer nations of Russian oil, per the BBC. The new executive order waived these sanctions before they came into effect. The move came after the President announced last week that he had concluded a discussion with the Russian president and claimed that Moscow had agreed to supply over 300,000 tons of diesel to the US and the global market. Since then, the president has blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the war several times and even demanded a new leader for the country, as reported by CNN.However, the POTUS has faced bipartisan pushback over his stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The new executive order signed by Trump also drew reactions from several lawmakers. GOP Senator Thom Tillis reacted to the news in an X post, saying:"Beyond irresponsible. What part of enforcing a law passed 86-11 by the Senate does the President and his advisors not understand? It’s unconscionable that this administration is capitulating to a Russian dictator who illegally invaded Ukraine and butchers innocent civilians every single day. If the president wants to actually bring down energy prices, he can do it by solving the Iran problem, not by doing a solid for Vladimir Putin."Tillis has consistently pushed back against Trump's dealings with Russia. He was among a group of bipartisan senators who wrote a letter to the president on October 13, urging him to withdraw his agreement with Putin. The new executive order from the president also drew strong reactions from Democratic leadership. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer slammed the president in an X post, writing:"Trump just gave Putin the best birthday gift he’ll get this year. By giving the Russian economy life support, Trump’s deal with the devil keeps getting dirtier. There’s nothing America First about Trump caving in to Putin and exempting Russia from US sanctions. Americans need relief from skyrocketing prices. Instead, Trump is aiding and abetting a dictator who has helped Iran target US troops in the Middle East."Zelensky remembers Lindsey Graham after Trump signs executive order exempting Russia from Graham Act sanctionsLate South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham was a strong supporter of empowering Ukraine against Russia. After Trump's executive order exempted Russia from sanctions under the Graham Act, Ukrainian President Zelensky called the move "unfortunate" and remembered the late senator. He wrote:"Sanctions relief will continue. I think the diesel deal and the move regarding the Lindsey Graham Act are not the end of it. Unfortunately. It’s unfortunate because we all had great respect for Lindsey. He devoted his life to America. We had an excellent relationship with him. And shortly before the tragedy, Lindsey was in Ukraine. He always supported us very strongly and pushed for as much assistance to Ukraine as possible. It’s difficult without him, I’ll be honest."Further in the post, Zelensky thanked both parties for their support of the bill and said the decision to undo the legislation "seems wrong to me." Zelensky has consistently accused Russia of targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
