Per the Mayo Clinic, shingles are a painful rash that can be:

"...caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you've had chickenpox, the virus stays in your body for the rest of your life."

Carol went on, recounting that her son had maintained three years of sobriety before his passing.

The actor's mom said she feared he may have taken drugs to manage the intense pain caused by the viral infection and believed his death was a tragic accident.
