Actor and comedian Marlon Wayans recently talked about his relationship with comedian Dave Chappelle and the criticism Chappelle has received for making jokes about the LGBTQ+ community and transgender individuals. The actor and comedian who has a trans son opened up about it.

Marlon Wayans stated that he doesn't think Chappelle's humor stems from prejudice against transgender individuals. Wayans said:

“I wouldn’t hang with Dave if he was full of hate. I don’t hang with people like that. I know Dave’s heart, and his intention isn’t to punch down. Dave wants to freely tell his jokes, and if you're going to be anti-comedy, then he's going to keep attacking you until you learn to have a sense of humor. He's just standing there and defending his front line as a comedian.”

Wayans went on to explain how he values both his child's experiences as a transgender person and Chappelle's viewpoint as a comedian:

“As a fellow comedian. I respect [Chappelle’s] journey. And as a friend, I respect his journey. And for my child, I respect their journey.”

Marlon Wayans went on to explain:

“And as the father of my child, I can appropriate my feelings toward my friend and my feelings toward my child, and how we can put those two things together and I can explain both sides. I’m between them, so I can explain both sides to each other.”

Why has Dave Chappelle faced backlash?

For the last couple of years, Chappelle has been under fire for making jokes about transgender people in his live performances and comedy specials.

After the comedian made comments regarding gender identity, pronouns, and transgender problems in his 2021 Netflix special The Closer, much of the debate escalated.

Protests and walkouts at the streaming service resulted from the special's broad backlash from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and some Netflix employees.

The material was openly denounced by groups like GLAAD and the National Black Justice Coalition, and some viewers accused Chappelle of endorsing transphobic language.

The comedian has been making multiple jokes about the LGBTQ+ community during his stand-up routines. The comedian joked about the gender pronouns used, compared the anatomy of transgender women with plant-based meat alternatives, and declared himself “Team TERF” (Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist) on the Netflix special.

Chappelle's work has frequently divided audiences, with some defending him with reasons like comedy and free speech, while some argue that the jokes reinforce harmful stereotypes about transgender people.

Following the uproar surrounding The Closer, Chappelle has already recognized the backlash and stated that he was open to speaking with LGBTQ+ critics and Netflix staff:

“Everyone I know from that community has been nothing but loving and supporting. I said what I said. And, boy, I heard what you said. My God, how could I not?”

More recently, the comedian criticized political figures for using anti-trans rhetoric in ways he said distorted his original intentions. Chappelle expressed his anger toward Republicans for "weaponizing" transgender humor for political ends in an interview with NPR back in April. He said:

“I did resent that the Republican Party ran on transgender jokes. I felt like they were doing a weaponized version of what I was doing.”

Marlon Wayans on supporting his son

Marlon Wayans shares Kai and Shawn with his ex-partner, Angela Zackery, and daughter Axl with his ex-partner, Brittany Moreland. Wayans has been vocal in his support of his son Kai's use of their pronouns.

The actor and comedian previously revealed in an interview with People back in 2024 that discovering Kai's identity caused him to go through a phase of reflection and personal development. Marlon Wayans said:

"It took me all of a week, and in that week I grew the most that I ever did in my life. You understand the purpose of kids and the beauty of unconditional love. At the end of the day, in my heart, only thing that matters to me is that my child is happy."

The actor has time and again openly denounced homophobia and transphobia, characterizing them as hate crimes. Marlon Wayans even got into an X spat with Soulja Boy, where he defended his son from the rapper's homophobic slurs targeting Kai. The actor stated:

"All of my kids are gifts, and our love is the wrapping paper. I’m not here for hate. Transphobia is a form of hate. Homophobia is a form of hate. Racism is a form of hate. All those small-hearted, small-minded people, there's a hell for you. And if you think you're gonna bully my child, go somewhere else. It's not going to happen. I won't stand for it."

Despite his support for the LGBTQ+ community, Marlon Wayans explained that Chappelle's comedy should be viewed through the lens of comedy and freedom of speech rather than personal malice.
