Debbie Gibson says she reached out to Carrot Top but didn’t hear from him two days before alleged suicidal attempt 

Debbie Gibson has made headlines after coming out in support of her friend Carrot Top. The comedian was recently hospitalized in Las Vegas following an alleged suicide attempt. The fifty-six-year-old singer-songwriter took to Instagram to publicly rally behind Thompson, whose real name is Scott Thompson, and revealed something that stopped a lot of people in their tracks.

Gibson shared that she had actually reached out to Carrot Top two days before the alleged attempt took place, and hadn't thought anything of the fact that he hadn't written back.

"Scott Thompson a.k.a. Carrot Top is one of those people who will send you a video message at some random time just to let you know he's thinking of you and to put a smile on your face," she wrote.

She then explained the silence that had preceded everything.

"I hadn't heard from him in a little longer than usual, so reached out literally two days ago. I figured he'd reply this week as he often does post-show weekend, so I didn't think anything of it when I didn't hear back right away," Gibson shared.

As per a report shared by TMZ, the sixty-one-year-old comedian and longtime Las Vegas performer was rushed to a local hospital on Friday, September 18, following the alleged attempt. His representative Jami Schlicher confirmed he was hospitalized and recovering.

"His family and those closest to him are deeply grateful for the concern, prayers and respectfully ask for privacy," shared Jami Schlicher.

While the full details surrounding the incident have not been made public, Carrot Top's friends in the industry haven't stayed quiet. Gibson, who included a gallery of photos of the two of them in her post, didn't stop at a simple message of support either; she went on to urge her followers to check in on the people around them who tend to pour themselves into others.

"Check on your friends, especially the ones who give and give and give as Scott does to his loved ones and his audiences. We are all here for you friend, and to anyone going through mental health issues, please know that I myself have a therapist on speed dial," she shared.

That being said, Gibson didn't just direct the message outward. The singer also opened up about her own relationship with mental health care.

"I've used all kinds of modalities including medications when necessary. I continue to explore whatever is going to best help me stay safe and happy and healthy on all levels," she noted.

Gibson then added that,

"Life is full of layers that nobody sees. There is no stigma in prioritizing your mental and emotional well being at all times!!!"

She wrapped up the post by opening the floor to anyone in her community who may be struggling themselves.

"This is a safe space and a loving community for all of you going through whatever you're going through," Gibson concluded.

Carrot Top once considered walking away from his Las Vegas residency before things finally clicked for him:

Carrot Top's Saturday show at the Luxor was also pulled following the alleged suicide attempt, as per a report shared by Us Weekly, adding to the Friday cancellation. The sixty-one-year-old has called the Luxor home since 2005, a run that now stretches well past sixteen years, though he was far from certain it would ever reach that point. Speaking in 2022, he recalled how the whole arrangement came together without much planning on his part.

"It came around by accident, believe it or not. I used to do a couple of weeks at a time at the MGM Grand, seventeen years ago. It was like a mini-residence. I would go there for two weeks, and then I would go on the road and do shows. Then, I would come back and do two weeks and then go back out on the road again," he shared.

Carrot Top noted that even when a full residency was eventually offered to him, his gut reaction wasn't excitement.

"I wasn't ready to be a resident headliner. I was reluctant. I said, 'Let's do a year and see how it goes.' It was horrible for that first year. I was living in the hotel. It was just not a good time. Things weren't working. Shows were tough and I was losing my mind, and thinking I have to get out of this gig. Then, one day it was really weird, I just started having fun and it started to click."

"I agreed to do another two years, making it a three-year deal, and at that point we really got into a groove. It wouldn't make any sense for me not to be in Vegas. You're in one place and people come to you, as opposed to you going to them. I've gotten used to the room."

Carrot Top's show had recently picked up nominations for Best Comedian, Best Resident Performer/Headliner and Best Production Show at the 2026 Best of Las Vegas Awards. As per a report shared by Page Six, his representative Jami Schlicher confirmed he was awake and breathing on his own, with fan messages having been passed along to him during his hospital stay, something Schlicher noted had meant a great deal to him throughout his recovery.
